I had a similar thought last night when looking at it. There are some positions (WR/OLB/HB) where you might even have 12 key attributes. I think if you just keep the ratio of 5/3/2 point attributes even, then it would work. For example: a 12 attribute position would have 4 5's, 4 3's and 4 2's.

Re: JRT2006's Madden Scouting Tool
That is correct.
I just ran a test, two different positions, same need multiplier, A grade across the board.
QB's had A grade on three 5 weighted attributes, three 3 weighted attributes, and 3 2 weighted attributes.
RB's had A grade on two 5 weighted attributes, two 3 weighted attributes, and two 2 weighted attributes.
Both had a True Value of 299.83
Both had a Final Grade (team need multiplier) of 269.85
As long as the weighted attributes are evenly distributed on each position, players get evaluated EQUALLY.
But, the less you scout, the less accurate the final grade will be, more precise values come from scouting more attributes.

Also, quick question. If I did that, say I did 2 of each for RBs, 2 of each for QBs, it wouldn't matter if they all aren't the same grade? Correct? It still comes out 'equal.' Right?Comment

Re: JRT2006's Madden Scouting Tool
Love this tool. It isn't like a draft guide in previous years(I thought it would be similar), instead it just helps you get a big board of players together of guys to target. Will definitely help me organize my thoughts for my draft. Thank you sir

Same Grade doesnt matter, as long as the skill weights are distributed evenly, players get valued equally.
You can scout QB's with one 5 weight, one 3 weight, and one 2 weight,
then
You can scout CB's with four 5 weights, four 3 weights, and four 2 weights,
then
You can scout WR's with three 5 weights, three 3 weights, and three 2 weights.
RESULT, each player is valued evenly.
As long as the weights are equal on THAT position, they dont have to be the same as the weights on the other positions.Comment

Re: JRT2006's Madden Scouting Tool
Youre welcome, I've always been big into creating tools for different things, I have many creations at work with excel and access. It interests me. Needless to say, right before starting this project, I had watched 'Moneyball'. HaHa

Re: JRT2006's Madden Scouting Tool
UPDATED/UPLOADED Scouting Tool. This should be the last update until I get feedback on errors, or suggestions.
This update includes a notifier underneath each skill weight chart letting you know how many of 5, 3, and 2 weights you have. When your weights are even, the 'EVEN WEIGHTS' will turn green to let you know.
I'm going to test this thoroughly right now and record my results/observations.
I will also not prospect information (round, pick, team, and their overall). Players drafted by other teams will show overalls, but I think those may be adjusted overalls based on that teams scheme, so I don't think they necessarily reflect what the players overall would be had I selected him.Comment

Re: JRT2006's Madden Scouting Tool
So im thinking out loud here and hopefully this might work but what if you were to take the template sheet from the one i sent and put it into your workbook and put "limits" in. example is 2 or more qb spots have names in them than it is not a needed position but if only one name is present than it is a need and that could be your weight definition. Just a idea. Thoughts?
(i have no clue how to do formulas or I would try it myself sorry)"They are who we thought they were!"Comment

Re: JRT2006's Madden Scouting Tool
With excel and vba, nearly everything is possible.
I like the idea, not sure if I will get around to attempting it anytime soon. I'm ready to start my ccm and have ignored the world for a week while making this.
Splitting the tabs would be great, QB scouting tab for instance. The top portion of the sheet is for scouting, while the bottom portion you enter your roster information. you could even put in player ratings for your current roster and have them judged by the weight system to determine a value for that player in your system. If your depth doesnt meet your criteria (2qb's want 3) or your player value doesnt meet your criteria (have a C and an F rated QB, want a B or higher) then the needs assessment is automatically changed for you.
Sounds great, would take a lot of work, would have to adjust the big board coade so it doesnt throw current roster info on the board, etc. Could also make a seperate 'Roster Eval Tool" and have the scouting tool search the Roster tool for team needs.Comment

Just to give some feedback, on the MLB page I have Man Cover set as a '1' but it didn't black out the attribute and it still impacting the rating. Not sure if it's just me or not but thought I'd pass that along. If I find anything else I will let you know and update this post.Comment

Too much Time on my hands
This is the **** that happens when I take a week of leave.
Here is the build up to my sim draft using the scouting tool. This extremely long story explains my team, and my reasoning behind the setting I've selected for the scouting tool.
Scouting Tool Test
-Sim Season Run Through
I'm running a quick(hopefully) sim of an online ccm. I Choose the Chiefs because its the team I follow in real life and have the most understanding for. Everything is set to auto because I'm not looking to waste time signing players and going through game prep. My main goal is run a team through a season real quick, evaluate the roster, scout using the tool, and draft.
First thing I do is go to 'Team Roadmap' because I want to adjust a few schemes. I know its not the way the Chiefs run, but I think KC is better suited for this style, and when i do my original CCM, I plan to adjust this way.
Offensive Playbook-A. Reid(KC)
Defensive Playbook-B. O'Brien(HOU)
Offense-West Coast
Defense-Attacking 3-4
QB-West Coast
HB-Receiving Back
FB-Blocking (not a scouting tool position)
WR-Route Runner (WR1, WR2, WR3 positions since Madden doesn't account for them seperately)
TE-Receiver
LT-Pass Blocker
LG-Zone Blocking
C-Pass Blocker
RG-Pass Blocking
RT-Run Blocking
LE-3-4 Versatile (I know KC's LE is a run stopper so this position will likely need to be upgraded at some point)
RE-3-4 Versatile
DT-Nose Tackle
LOLB-3-4 Pass Rusher
MLB-3-4 Tackler
ROLB-3-4 Pass Rusher
CB-Man To Man (I like to run Man Press, so Man Coverage and press will be emphasized in scouting)
FS-Zone (I Send Eric Berry on a lot of blitzes, having a FS to play the zone is important without Berry's help)
SS-PlayMaker
K,P-Accuracy (Not a scouting tool position)
::Simming to OffSeason::
Kansas City finishes the season 10-5-1, 7th best team in the NFL, and wins the AFC West.

Team Needs Evaluation
:elegating Team Activities to week before draft::
::Computer Sim Coaching was very active in FA::
::5460 scouting points with Andy Reid::
QB:
Alex Smith is rated 88 and has a good 3 years left on his contract. He will likely hold down the starting positing barring injury.
His backup is Chase Daniel, I'm not a fan of Daniel. His rating is a 77 which isnt terrible for a backup, but he gets paid to much to warm the bench and will likely be let go when contract expires
Behind Daniels battling for the third spot is Murray and Bray. Murray is a west coast QB but he doesnt seem to be improving each week. Bray is a strong arm QB and I'll likely have to restructure my scheme and playbook to make him fit.
I'm going to designate the QB spot with a BPA code of '1'. I wont look for a QB unless the value is good in the later rounds, 5th-7th. I want to give the others some competition and if I find a gem, develop him.
HB:
Jamaal Charles is perfect for my scheme and has a lot of good years ahead of him if he can stay healthy.
Knile Davis isn't bad, but he doesnt fit the mold of halfback I'm looking for. He will suffice for now, but I'd like a more elusive back in the depth chart to releive Charles
3rd and 4th runningbacks were acquired through free agency, fodder. Likely brought in for camp wars and wont make the team.
I'm going to designate the HB position with a BPA '1'. I'm not desperate for a HB in the draft, but if there is good value when I pick, I wont hesitate to take the guy and work with him.
WR:
Dwayne Bowe is my starter, he doesnt fit the mold of a typical west coast route runner, he isn't agile or quick. The guy does run some precise routes though and will make defenders miss with his strength.
Behind Bowe we have Avery, and newly acquired Dwayne Harris. Both guys definitely need to improve some aspect of their game, whether it be catching or route running, but as 2nd and 3rd receivers, I'm not too worried about them.
Behind Avery and Harris we have Givens, Jenkins, and Coleman. Coleman has a shot to make the team again, he's on his 1st year and has shown some good catching ability. Jenkins and Givens on the other hand haven't proved their worth.
I'm going to designate a Best Value Pick '.9' to the Wide Receiver position. I'm not in a rush to draft a Wide Receiver as I think we have bigger needs to fill, but if a talented guy falls and I'm on the clock, I will grab him just for value alone. Can never have enough receivers.
TE:
The tight end position is pretty much set. Fasano is an experienced Tight End with a good balance of blocking and receiving. He can be used in multipple formations. Travis kelce is an up and coming star with the mold of Gronkowski. He fits the system perfectly and I think will continue to improve.
I likely won't scout the TE position, but I will designate it with a Best Value pick '.9' in case I have some extra points to dump.
LT:
Eric Fisher is our only Left Tackle on the team and I think he fits my mold of LG more than LT. Regardless of a position change, I hate dipping into other positions to fill a hole in case of injury, therefor, LT is a big need for the team right now.
I will Designate LT with a Slight Reach '1.03' to ensure I draft a LT to play, if not immediately, in the very near future. I don't want to miss out on any of the top guys that fit my scheme.
LG:
Laurent Duvarney-Tardif is my project LG. he fits the mold if only he can increase his blocking skills. Like I said earlier, I think Fisher would make a great LG as well. That in mind, this position isn't necessarily a huge need of mine and therefor I will probably skip over scouting it. Best Value Pick '.9' will be placed on LG and if there is a "can't pass" prospect on the board, I will take him and work my OL around it.
C:
Rodney Hudson is my starter, he will hold the position as long as he stays healthy. he has what it takes to play my game and won't go anywhere. Eric Kush as a back-up isn't the ideal situation, but I feel confident he cant hold it down if he has to step in. Worst case scenario, I will look to free agency if I need a filler in the future. C gets a Best Value pick '.9'
RG:
I'm weak at the RG position, very inexperienced and little talent. Zach Fulton was just drafted last year and had a decent rookie season. if he cantinues to improve, I can see him taking the starting spot over from the free agent just acquired. With 3 low teir RG's on the roster, I'm not looking to add more unless there is somebody great out there at my pick. I'll designate RG with a Best Player Available '1' and shuffle my line if I draft somebody.
RT:
Donald Stephenson is my anchor at RT. He fits in with the system and will hold that side of the line down for awhile (if he can stay of the PEDs). behind Stephenson I have nobody, therefor I am looking for depth at this positin. Somebody who step in if needed, but I don't want to waste too much money on a back-up (ugh hmm Chase Daniel), so I will give RT a Best player Available '1' mark and look for some depth in the later rounds.
LE/RE:
My Defensive End position are held down pretty well. Allen Bailey and Jaye Howard on the right side with Devito and Vance Walker on the left. Both sides have a good mix of run stop and pass rush which allows me to rotate for situations. The LE/RE positions will be given a Best Value Pick '.9' designation and will be ignored unless there are extra scouting points to spend.
DT:
Dontari Poe is the "now" and "the future" of KC's nose tackle position. I'm not looking for an immediate upgrade for Poe anytime soon. What I am looking for is good depth behind him, and Unrein and Damian Square are not it. They were good fits when I ran my Hybrid defense, but as pure Nose Tackles, they just are big enough, or strong enough. DT will be given a '1' Best Player Available designation.
LOLB/ROLB:
Justin Houston(LOLB) is in his contract year and Tamba Hali(ROLB) is aging. I will continue to work on an extension for Houston, but in case I may need to get a player to take his spot. Dee Ford was drafted to help the situation out, but the unexpected stall in Houstons negotiations leave us in a nasty spot at both positions. We will look for a decent player at either position, and hope the contract situation gets worked out so our rookie can be developed for the future. LOLB/ROLB will both get a Slight Reach "1.03" designation and whichever position is drafted, the other wont be.
MLB:
Some may say Derrick Johnson has hit his point at the age of 32, but I think he's just passed his prime. He has always had the skill, with age came experience. Theres no telling how much longer he will play, but I'm hoping to get another good 3 years out of him. Joe Mays behind Johnson works and works well, but the last two guys arent cutting it. We won't go looking for replacements just yet, we will give them time to develop. I'm giving MLB a Best Value '.9' designation; James-Michael Johnson and Nico Johnson better keep their eyes open, because I will scout MLB's and draft a player if the value proves worthy.
CB:
Sean Smith, Marcus Cooper, and Phillip Gaines all fit the mold of cornerback I prefer. With Cooper and Gaines both being 1st and 2nd year players, they need time to develop. Sitting at the 4th position is Josh Gordy who doesnt fit my starting goal, but would make a decent nickelback. I like to keep 5-6 corners on my roster, only have 4, so i will be looking to draft a corner with BPA '1', and if the value is there I may take 2.
FS:
Neither of my two Free Safeties fit my position mold. Bronson is a young guy so he could develop into what I need in the future, but Abdullah won't and we want somebody to take his spot. i don't want to reach too high for Free Safety as Abdullah did hold his own last season, but I will give the position a slight advantage and go with the Slight Reach '1.03' designator.
SS:
Eric Berry - need I say more. .9Comment

It won't impact the rating if you leave it blank. only the cells with values entered are averaged out. The black out was just to keep you from entering information
i will correct and upload again after my draft. ThanksComment

Re: JRT2006's Madden Scouting Tool
Do you think 7 points is good for added value of "slight reaching"?
Significant Reach is 12 points....
4 point difference between slight and significant doesnt sound like a big change.
But with so many players having similar value, I guess I can see the advantage of slight putting them ahead of a couple of guys and significant making a strong push at putting them to the top of the board if they are decentComment

Re: JRT2006's Madden Scouting Tool
Dammit you are right, I thought i caught all of those, earlier half the roster was that way with acceleration.

I think the 7 points for slight reach, 12 for large reach seems fair as of now.
By the way I run 3-4 also (my offense is different but my D is similar) and use pretty much the same attributes settings for MLB that you do which I'm focusing on right now. (Except AWR and PR I don't scout, while I agree they are important but I find those easy to upgrade with the XP so I don't scout for it)Comment
