NFL loves money (not that other sports leagues don't, but the NFL draws money on another level). Disney was the highest bidder. I am actually surprised the NFL didn't take the money on this one quite honestly.

Sky I've found you to be reasonable for the most part so let me ask, at what point does discussing the game, granted albeit usually in an unfavorable light, becoming trolling, in your opinion?

That's a sincere question too because since I don't have a football game to enjoy, posting about the genre is how I get my fix.

It made more sense to go with EA. They already had a longstanding relationship, a successful product, and a fat wallet.

It's not that simple. Madden was the most popular game with an nfl license. It would've been insane for them to go with a company that has never produced a football game for an exclusive deal. It would've also been insane for them to effectively kill the biggest brand name in football video games.

Disney was never a legit option even with the higher bid.

True. Not trying to go off-topic, but I need some clarification. I know that publishers can get around the exclusive deal if it's mobile. Does that apply to tablets? If so someone could potentially make a tablet game with the NFL.

Yes and there are nfl games that can be played on tablets now.

Why not? The NFL eliminated quality games like 2k and NFL fever with the deal. It was about more money. As far as I know, Disney just planned on upping the price a bit a redistributing the license to anyone who asked. They didn't have a game of their own and didn't need one to make a profit with the purchase.

Adding on further, Disney did have a deal with 2K about the ESPN license. They could have had Visual Concepts or another third party developer make the game with Disney (or ESPN) as the publisher.

Big, you could be onto something. All the vets should know(including yours truly) what happens when the license talk comes up; it's similar to the great divide and goes on endlessly.

When a vet sees someone new posting about the license, a quick link could be provided by one of the vets and directed to that thread or to outside sources.

It just follows the same old constant path I've seen over the past decade.

There should be room on the bus for everyone, sim, don't buy Madden and sim who enjoy Madden for what it is.lol

Why would a company lobby for a bidding war if they didn't already know that they were going to be able to obtain it via their inflated capital? Sega was dying, and EA was at the top of the food chain with an inferior product. They knew what they were doing. There wasn't a chance in the world that they were going to be outbid. Come on now.

Yes I'm the naive one. When the NFL went to the "officially licensed (______) of the NFL" They did this across several mediums. Who was the first one to with the uniforms and on-field apparel deal...? Reebok beat out Nike, Adidas and a few others. 2K had a chance to win the license.

Reebok didn't then and doesn't now have more money than Nike, they just made the best offer. EA wasn't the highest bidder but they made the best offer, obviously better than 2K.

I don't care frankly, but it's been 10 years and the NFL did more to kill 2K football than EA. I'm done with EA football it's not worth it to me to continue down this path of mediocrity. Too many great games out to spend money on a product that doesn't want my money.

2k and fever weren't on the same level of Madden when it came to brand recognition.

Thats part of the reason I think I liked Madden 15. For example, the lack of holding penalties annoyed the **** out of me when I first got the game. I reached out to Madden dev Clint on Twitter and he made it clear that new OL/DL changes didnt affect holding and that the dev team didnt see the lack of holding penalties as am problem.

Now 20 yr old me wouldve started a thread about the holding penalties. 20 yr old me wouldve mentioned it in every thread I could. 20 yr old me wouldve asked Steve if I could write a quick article on OS bashing the dev team for ignoring such a fundamental part of the game. 20 yr old me wouldve harassed Clint on Twitter until he blocked me.

I'm 37 now with a wife and a kid who gets excited whenever he has any free time to just unwind and play video games. I had a ball doing that this year. Madden 15 is flawed like most Maddens but it was good enough for me to enjoy playing it and ignore the issues that the game has.

Many of my contemporaries from 10-15 yrs ago are the same way. These are the same guys who would attend E3 with me and respectively call devs out about issues in the games. These guys are still playing video games but they've found a way to ignore the issues.

With that said, I'm still a bit obsessive about NBA basketball and I still find the time and energy to flip out over basic things NBA games leave out so I'm not completely dead.
I just wanted to respond to this. I actually think there is another segment of gamers who have just stopped playing Madden all together due to the fact that it is inferior to so many other games on the market and honestly this is case with me. I play for about 2 weeks and then I move on to something else. 10 years ago...heck even 5 years ago I never would've stopped playing the game not even two weeks into the NFL season. However I just don't have the time to play a game that hasn't progressed all that much and really doesn't bring me that much enjoyment. That is not to say that Madden is a bad game..its actually a pretty good one, but the enjoyment factor just isnt there anymore. I'm know I'm in the minority in this but again I just dont see that game I need...I mainly buy it out of habit.

to get back on topic I'm anxious to see what they have in store for Madden 16. I really want to be pleasantly surprised.

There are many aspects to this argument that are flawed, but I don't want to derail this thread any further over a topic that has been beat in to the ground and then some.

No matter your particular viewpoint, we all ended up losing because of the deal.
