Well it's all about how you want to play the game. As the User, you should have the option. The game doesn't force you to have to press any button. I believe you are right in terms of ratings and player likeness. If a wr like julian edelman is coming across the middle he would more than likely make a possession pass and go down. However having the option to decide the type of catch should most definitely be in the game.

So you want the CPU to play for you? Aren't we trying to get away from that

I think it looks good on paper. This way, team play will be interesting for all 3 players on offense instead of just the QB. If you aren't doing team play, the WRs and CBs will probably be doing this by themselves, hopefully resulting in more realistic interaction between the two. The only thing you'll have to learn is the different winning animations for your WRs and what that means for how/when they'll be open. If done properly, it could really improve the aesthetics and realism of the game.

As for the catch mechanics discussion, but I think it is one of the better features added to Madden recently. The argument that "receivers don't actually think that they need to make an aggressive catch now" is silly and the exact same as arguing that QBs don't think "I need to throw a lob pass now." These mechanics exist in real life, and receivers subconsciously use them on every catch depending on the positioning of the defenders around them. But there is room for interpretation and risk/reward when making the decisions, so the best way to give the user some control on how his team plays the game is to setup some basic controls on how the players will approach each situation.
        Cow. Boys.

The theory behind all of these mechanics is that the CPU will also perform them as well. These new WR/DB mechanics are not only going to make things more fun for the user, but also adds more animations. In theory, CPU DB/WR interaction is going to benefit greatly from this.

You can then start to have player likeness based on what CPU players use what mechanics.

Is this just for MUT Squads? Will I be able to utilize it if I control a corner in my CFM? Most importantly, will my CPU players utilize any of this?

Is this confirmed by anyone with first hand knowledge?

Should be able to, Rex says it's not just for Squads.

Sounds great BUT they need to get pass interference right now. I hate seeing WR's and DB's run into each with no flag thrown.

I would think allowing which side and direction to press will help with playing cover 1 press if you have the right corners and what not

Here is the key to this -- we need to see loss and win animations.

Having something akin to a rock, paper, scissors minigame is not the route I would have went, but I can live with.

What I'm worried about is if the game uses clear win/loss animations it doesn't really fix the problem of past years.

In real life a wide receiver doesn't think "hey I need to make an aggressive catch" he just makes and adjustment to the ball and does what he needs to make a catch.

Seems madden is really trying to push that "stick skills" stuff.
IMO. To be fair, before the aggressive /possession/spec/RAC catch buttons, the community was angry when a WR did a animation that didn't any sense. Falling to the ground instead of turning up field.

I'm more comfortable saying "dang I pushed the wrong button" as opposed to saying "Dang it AI why did you do that!"

At the end of the day it's a video game right? If I play Battlefield, I don't just move my dude into position and have him shoot because he just should. Surely the more control the player has, the better? Just my opinion.

In real life you DO, however, decide which direction you're going to try to press a WR, and as a WR, you DO determine a direction you're going to try to use to beat press coverage.

I'd like to be able to utilize this without controlling a corner. If I'm expecting a slant, let me choose to have my corners jam the WRs to the inside presnap while I control a d-lineman
