    QB Read Guide?

Hey guys, I think I am just getting old, but for the life of me I just can't figure out how to read defenses. I've done all of the trainings, or at least I did in last year's Madden. But for some reason it just doesn't click.

I think what would be super helpful for me would be if there is a step-by-step guide out there somewhere.

    Something like:

    Pre-Snap

    1. Check for the location of the safeties.

    a. If there are two side-by-side, then it is likely cover 2.

Concepts likely to work against cover 2: blah blah

    2. Check where the corner backs are lined up

    Etc etc

Is anyone aware of the existence of something like this out on the inter-webs?

    QB Read Guide?

I'm sure there's something on the web, but the madden tutorials actually go over some of this stuff. I don't have it in front of me right now. But, maybe 'advanced offense' tutorial? But, somewhere in the offensive tutorials, they actually mention stuff like 'CBs close to the line. 1 deep safety in the middle. Use the flood concept' or whatnot. That's not a real example, so be careful! [emoji6][emoji41]. They also have run concepts against certain D as well. It's actually good enough to help and I believe is actually based off sound coaching advice they've gotten.

Think it was about a week ago we had a thread that had some good responses regarding this very thing. I'll see if I can track it down for you.

Further back than I thought, but here it is:

Thanks, I'll check that out again. I guess I'm looking for something in writing because I am having trouble internalizing those lessons! I fly through those, and then I step away from Madden for a few weeks and forget it all!

There is an excellent book by Pat Kirwan of CBS/NFL Radio that breaks everything down on both sides of the ball. It's called "Take Your Eye Off The Ball". It will change the way you watch football and play Madden.

As for sites do a google search for "how to read an NFL defense" the first 4-5 sites that pop up give a pretty thorough breakdown.

I'm the opposite generally, I need practice doing something to fully process it.

If you got the time, and are first and foremost a football fan, I'd suggest put the idea of Madden tutorials on the backburner for now. Do some reading on real life football, maybe check some youtube videos on the subject as well. That will give you your foundation, then approach Madden.

Regardless of what route you take, spend time in practice mode. To be honest I need to spend time there myself to refresh some things. I'm a bit rusty myself

                I suggest 2 things:

                ● Go to practice mode either pick one offensive play to learn and set the defense to random play or pick one defense to practice against and set your offense to random play. Whichever way you learn best.

                ● When you call your play, pick 2, 3 routes at the most and order them in your mind. At the snap check #1, then #2, then run or dump off. Forget the score and just focus on avoiding negative plays.

If you throw a pick, check the replay. What didn't you see? Where should you have thrown? Did you throw late?

                Practice, practice, practice.
