It's just that I'm terrible at it, which I am, but the payoff is low as far as mastering it. I mean, it's difficult as crap to use and, once I finally master it? I can use it in a few isolated situations.

    Just 0 incentive to use.

Don't use it, but like others said, I think I will try it on goal line fades. The main reason I do not use it is because you can't scramble while holding all that stuff down, at least I do not think you can. So if you have it held down and a DE is coming at you, well then you are about to get blasted. Unless there is something I am missing(please let me know if there is), you can't scramble while using it. If that is the case, I think it's pretty much a throw in feature that they could have not wasted their time on, especially if they never work on improving it in future Madden's, which is highly unlikely.

I don't agree with this, I think it's actually incredibly helpful in certain situations. The problem is.....

        THIS.

NOBODY really understands how to use this feature, it's not explained very well in the game IMO and once a few people try it, and suck with it, they just give up on it.

I did too honestly - I didn't revert back to trying this for a couple weeks after the game launched.

I think this could be an amazing tool, they just need to have an in depth tutorial that explains it perfectly or else it'll never stick around.

And to reiterate what I quoted above, this really only works in a few situational passing plays, so he's right, the incentive isn't that great to master it which has seemingly been a turn off across the board for everyone.

I understand the feature just fine. It is simply poorly implemented. I do think it is best used for fades at the goal line though. And some other specific routes that require precision passing.

The main issue is you don't have much time to use the feature before getting sacked. And you basically have to throw it to the receiver you select before the snap. I talked about this earlier in the Madden 18 season, but it should have been implemented as a special tool you get to use a select few times a game, like challenges. And the feature should slow everything down and allow you time to go through your progressions and make the proper read for the targeted precision pass.

The practice tutorial isn't so bad, but it is nothing like a real game experience where you have to deal with multiple receiving options, a pass rush, and pass defenders.

Excellent post! This feature is a great idea it was just implemented poorly. Not to mention the risk of using it far outweighs the reward. Most of the top Madden players can throw the ball effectively without touching it.

Well, that makes it incredibly realistic to NFL style game play then, no?

It's not like a QB can sit around for 7 seconds and wait for a play to develop, they're typically pressured into making throws early or having to run either back up in or out of the pocket to avoid pressure.

Thats how everything in madden has went for the past 8 years. Cater to everyone by making everything easy. I just want one thing that it for advanced players with a better understand of the football.

                    I absolutely love this feature!

The link below is from my online franchise. This is the perfect situation to use target passing.. the fade route!

You will notice from the video (8:22 ish mark) that I set AB up for a chance to get the ball where his route was almost leading him out of bounds.

I also have a screen grab of when I loaded up target passing and where the route/target passing are set up.

Similar to many in this thread, I haven't spent much time with target passing.

I'd be curious as to how the competitive scene has taken to it, though, since that the group of players the feature targeted, pardon the pun.

                        Re: Target Passing: October Check-In

I have read a few responses saying that they only use it when they need to be more precise but I find that I am far less precise when I use it. I usually make a bad throw when I try it but I admit that I have not used it enough to get really good at it. The fades are the only time I have used it with any regularity.

I feel that way if I use it in most situations. The comeback routes where I want it to the sideline and the fade routes where I want it to the corner have been the two I've had most success with. Both of those routes I'm locked to one guy unless coverage shows they will be covered post snap. I almost treat it like a quick first read, and only throw if the coverage is what I want. If not open, I don't use it and continue my play just as any other time.

                            Re: Target Passing: October Check-In

I really enjoy it. I actually feel like I'm working through my progressions when I use this feature. I can't really look at a primary receiver on one side of the field, and then instantly throw to the opposite side of the field like I could with the icons. To me, the second it takes to move the cursor from one side of the field to the other simulates a QB having to reset his feet to throw to the opposite side of the field. Sitting in a God view camera, where you can see the whole field, and being able to instantly throw to any receiver in any direction isn't very realistic in my opinion. Going through progressions and resetting their feet is a big deal for QBs in real life. And yes, sometimes, your line doesn't give you enough time to go through 4-5 reads. Again, it places a bigger premium on making good pre-snap reads.

In pretty much every measurable sense, the icons are much more effective to use, but I just have a lot more fun using the target passing because of the challenge. Those moments when the defense gives you exactly what you were anticipating, and you put that perfect ball on your receiver for a big gain/touchdown ... it's some of the most fun I've had with a sports game.

BTW, you can quickly scramble out of the pocket by pressing R2. My biggest complaint with the system though is that you can't really step up in the pocket. Sometimes, DEs will come off the edge and all I'd need to do is take one step up in the pocket to buy myself an extra second or two, but you can't really do it. It'd be nice if flicking the R-Stick up would let you step up.

I find it the best way to be able to play Madden against the CPU without either dominating the AI or having the AI cheat you. Play on All Pro, and do target passing with every pocket pass, minimum. Screen passes I do not use it, and on roll outs I will run first, then stop and use it in most instances.
