Which Madden is considered the best overall game of this gen?

Madden 18 (One X)for me, personally. It’s the first football game I’ve played consistently past it’s annual cycle since 2K5.

This is OS, so I know there’s probably a laundry list of things this game doesn’t do well that I’m not fully aware of. But to me, it’s the best balance of all the things I need to be immersed in a football game: functional AI, broadcast presentation, working franchise mode, working signature throw animations, and smooth gameplay. Even the pre play small detail animations look good and realistic.

That’s not to suggest it needs to be on some pedestal. It’s just that annual football games out of that studio tend to have “this” feature but not “that”
feature each year, or this was working last year, but it’s not working now (sig animations for years). M18 is the game that sort of has all I need working at some level.

Until Madden takes an appreciable step forward (M19 wasn’t it), Madden 18 will probably be my go to this cycle.

Just reinstalled 16 and 17 and I enjoyed both more than 19. If I have to choose I’d go with 16

17 for me also. It also helped that I didn't own a console for two years and thus, skipped out on buying Madden. But...man, I went so deep with my Dolphins franchise. Everything felt so fresh to me.

So is it safe to say 19 is considered one of the worst? Now where would you throw Madden 20 into that mix?

I'd say 18, 20, 17, 25, 19

Here are my rankings

1. Madden 20 - Gameplay is king and this is easily the best playing Madden this generation. I love the game and am having a great time. Player differentiation is a real thing finally. Ratings spreads, far better draft classes, passing game is amazing. Everything just feels buttery smooth.

2. Madden 16 - I still love this game. Yes it is dated somewhat and does not have the gradual but impactful improvements CFM has gotten since it's release. Also no 4K HD but man...QB AI, Penalties, Fatigue it all worked great on Madden 16. I can still play some classic rosters on this puppy. Tackling was great. Really great effort and the last real great attempt at development for the simulation minded offline solo players like me.

3. Madden 19 - This game get's a lot of heat around here and rightfully so. I personally had a blast with it.....starting in March 2019. What a difficult cycle it was. Patched to death. In fact I had to stop playing it for 4 months. It was rough. But now it plays a good game. I have a crap ton of classic rosters and draft classes....but playing Madden 20 makes it very hard to go back right now. Maybe after some time passes I can go back. But not now. I would go to 16 before 19 easily.

4. Madden 25 to Madden 18 are utterly forgettable for me.

My top 3 is firm.

I don't know why Madden 18 is leading this poll. I thought the game played way better on the IGNITE engine. And I thought it went downhill on 18, and 19 was the worst.

18 was the current version when this poll was made and the current one will always win these polls.It takes time to put things into perspective.

I'll always have a soft spot for Madden NFL 16. It was my first Madden of this generation and, like others have said, its gameplay holds up very well and in some regards has yet to be topped by its successors. M16 had impressive CPU QB scrambling AI, realistic fatigue and penalties, and, overall, a nice balance between offense and defense; I had my share of low-scoring defensive battles, shootouts, and everything in between.

I had a lot of fun with M17 as well. The Franchise additions they made that cycle (full player editing, practice squads, in-game ticker) were invaluable. The lack of practice squads, in particular, make M16's Franchise mode difficult to go back to for extended periods of time. Other welcome additions in M17 included updated equipment and Brandon Davis/Charles Gaudin commentary. However, gameplay seemed a bit wonkier, with CPU QB AI regressing noticeably.

As for M18 and M19, I found the gameplay for both to be excessively janky, buggy and wonky. M19 in particular marked the least time I had spent with a Madden title in about five years. However, I would like to give M19 a fair shake one day with iMac's trait edits. By the time I became aware of those it was pretty late in that game's cycle.

The early returns for M20 seem promising. Although Franchise is still missing some big things we've been waiting years for (assistant coaches and historical stat tracking, for example), gameplay feels much improved from M19. For the most part, the growing pains associated with Frostbite and RPM seem to have been mitigated. Provided this year's patches don't detract from the game's strengths or introduce too many unintended consequences, I can easily see M20 sliding in with M16 and M17 as my favorites from this generation.

Also, M16 and M17 had great soundtracks. Though, I realize that's pretty subjective.

For me, M17. But that came after a two year break and I could fully appreciate having a fresh football game. Looks like I need to take another two years off.
