Re: Madden 21: EA 'Working on Bolstering Plans to Support Franchise' in Response to #

This is how I feel about Madden 21 in a nutshell.

They roll out the much touted “scenario engine” on Madden 20 which turned out to be nothing much.

They did not even put an ounce of effort to improve and expand it for 21. Such a lack of effort on it, no mention in the Madden Classic Franchise patch notes for 21

That is a clear vision from EA on the state of “Classic we are not touching” franchise mode on Madden 21.

We have a choice. Buy it or don’t buy it.

It was a heck of run. But until I see this game truly commit to making franchise mode feel like a real mode of team building where the CPU can do what I do? Until the CPU AI is drastically improved upon?

What is the point? The CPU AI is wretched compared to a few other sports titles (The Show and NBA2K).

    I mean downright embarrassing.

You can put all the bells and whistles you want into franchise mode, but if the CPU is brain dead playing on and off then field then who gives a real rats *** about it?

That is the real core issue for offline solitaire franchise guys like myself.

They gotta get gameplay from the AI and gameplay from a simulation mode right. They have failed in several aspects of that.

That is the core foundation of a great sports game. Madden has not accomplished that in over a decade and a half.

Penalties, injuries, foot planting, true player weight and momentum, true authentic broadcast presentation.....i am done waiting.

Until those things are truly “upgraded” like I said....it was a good run for me.

Here is hoping to something better on PS5.

They peaked on PS4 with Madden 16 and it truly has been all downhill in terms of simulation gameplay since.

Too many complaints of too many flags and injuries....it has stymied the progression of this game.

    Facts.

Off-ball Injuries worked amazingly well on M19. Kids complained profusely..nerfed for 20.

Penalties were awesome on 16....complaints ensued....nerfed worse each and every iteration since.

Tackling was smooth and fun on 16 (like the first time we had real gang tackles since Madden 2010 LOL) nerfed ever since. So stiff....and arcade like now.

CPU QB AI was outstanding on 16.....worse each iteration ever since. I mean so much freaking editing having to be done to get them to not be brain dead.

RB AI is really good on 20......so what will happen on 21? LOL!!!

It simply never ends. 1 step forward 3 steps back.....we have never seen a truly complete game top to bottom gameplay wise. They cannot decide what they want to be.....actually they have. It is becoming clear.

And that’s cool. Time for me to just bow out. No worries. I mean....it is just a game right? I can play Madden 16 and 20....and heck even go back to some older ones on the PS3 and PS2 and have fun because they have what I am looking for. Heck NCAA 14....awesome game. It has the depth I love with Dynasty mode and the true uniqueness across the over 112 teams with playbooks, AI behavior etc.

There are options out there as long as you can play older titles that did things a lot better than recently (Madden 17, 18 and 19 were simply failures in the end and Madden 20 to me was a very solid effort.....but Madden 21 is shaping up to be nothing more than a mailed in effort knowing they are moving on to the PS5).

Zero effort for franchise players, no mention of improved AI, improved injuries, improved penalties.....because there are no improvements there. The vision is clear. It is about MUT, Madden bowl and micro transactions.

At least MLB The Show improves gameplay every single solitary year without fail. Hats off to that team.

So #FixMaddenFranchise was acknowledged by the team. That's certainly a start...

BUT EA has been "reading our feedback" and "understanding our frustration" for years now. It's the same non-answer they've been giving us for the last 3-4 iterations.

Their words mean nothing until they actually start making changes.

Franchise mode improvements are rightfully at the forefront but honestly they need to rebuild the game.

One of the primary problems I have always had with Madden is the tackling. Outside of maybe the hit stick animations, there is this sort of slow, underwater, "and we all...fall...dooown!" gentle type of feel to tackling. There is no sense of suddeness, true impact or explosiveness.....no sense of physicality.

It detracts completely from the immersion of the game and it has plagued Madden since forever and continues in M21. I don't see how they fix it without tearing the whole thing up and starting fresh.

This video means nothing. It's a cute gesture, but until they actually invest in the mode, which it's probably too late at this point to actually do this year, this stuff means nothing.

Also- this is 100% confirmation that next-gen has the exact same mode. This would've been the time to sell us on that, not whine about how they can't add to the mode this year because they're working from home.

              I agree with second part.

This would have been the perfect time to say "While the franchise guys are disappointed now, just wait until we reveal more next gen information. We have something special for you guys." With that statement, that says probably had no plans for next gen either

That makes me wonder what they were going to promote for Next Gen. Outside of the Lighting/Visuals and Spatialized audio/other hardware features, I hope there were a lot more done. I see FoTF being the same outside of higher quality cutscenes. If Franchise wasn't going to get any love, what else were they going to do. I hope it isn't just another gimmicky mode.
I just hope next gen isn't just improved visuals/immersion(hopefully) and improved gameplay. I don't just want an improved version of current gen Madden. I want a next gen Madden. I rather they built from the ground up for next gen..

Sorry but at this point “working on bolstering” isn’t good enough. I have been “working on” losing weight for the last 20 years. And what exactly is “bolstering?” I think the word EA is looking for is overhauling.

I need to hear that franchise is their priority. And I need to hear how they are implementing it. What feedback are they soliciting? I sure hope it is not the same people who told you that face of the franchise nonsense is the way to go.

It doesn’t even matter what they SAY. The last 2/3 years they said they were “recommitted to franchise”.

We already know, “living worlds” or whatever term they are using this time around, “dynamic lighting” or whatever term they are using this time around, “improved played models”, and my personal favorite like its an actual feature, faster load times!!!

Don’t know what to think being this is EA, we will have to wait and see.

My problem is EA’s Football Game has more Problems than just Franchise. I’m hoping they do try and bolster Franchise don’t get me wrong. But. Gameplay is sooo far from where it should be in 2020 (IMO).
Just general animations- lack of proper modes working correctly (Coach Mode)

Lack of imagination in Game Presentation...ex: a Pregame show that is more statistical in terms of teams that are playing ect...

I don’t think I’ll ever see these things addressed but I’m hoping for the best, just not confident EA remembers what a NFL experience means anymore...

                          ...

Well said. I'm right there with you. I'd really love to see the core aspects to franchise overhauled and actually fixed before they start adding anything on and tackling presentation/immersion.

To me, the CPU limitations and core stat tracking being broken are the biggest issues I have with franchise. Immersion and presentation and any new feature are icing on top for me. I usually turn off/skip most of the presentation stuff because it is outdated and I never cared for it much to begin with.

I just want the ability to control a team in a solo franchise for years on years and for the CPU to not have to be constantly micro-managed for all 31 additional teams by myself so that the experience is rewarding. And then there are all the issues with stat tracking. Stats being outright broken and not tallied (for like the last 3 years many players' stats don't count). Tracking which teams players played for and simple stuff like that. All of that is available on pro football reference to begin with. Why not just work on scripts to pull all of that data in? I could do that in a few afternoons of work.

And then there is the CPU AI on the field and how broken it is. CPU running the ball all game until the 4th quarter when they are down. It gives the CPU no chance to come back in some games. Making stupid decisions not even knowing what to do in OT. And then all the other simple decisions. Subbing/roster management. CPU not starting highly drafted rookies as well, which hinders their development.

Those are the core aspects. CPU on and off the field, like you mention, and stats.

I was hoping for a new physics engine for next gen but it doesn’t sound like we are getting anything special.

If you look at Madden 06 as we transitioned onto new more powerful consoles and how “bare bones” that game was, fast forward to Madden 21 moving to again, a new more powerful console, these moments will be 100% identical.

There was no advancement of the game, Franchise or Gameplay leading into the transition.
“Just Stripped Bare Bones” game being sold (seems very familiar)

What we’re seeing today is part of the EA’s overall business model as was with M06.

                                Two unexpected differences....
                                1) Pandemic
                                2) Social Media

Not even gameplay is that much different in M21.

Bare Bones going to a new console (ie Madden 06)
