You answer the question yourself in the post. EA makes more money ignoring franchise than catering to franchise fans. They, at the very least, believe this to be true.

Franchise modes, at this point, are just holdover modes from how sports games used to be played. It’s a declining niche of gamers that pay the least but demand the most. It’s why 2K is still interested in the market without sim play. It’s why The Show and everyone else just stopped emphasizing franchise modes.

And I am positive 2K knows full well that MyPlayer and MyCourt are why 2K dominates sports game sales. There is way more money in sports games that let you play as a team with friends against other teams of gamers playing together.

What is driving sports games now? The same things that drove us to play backyard sports as kids, the fun of competition. Consoles are connected and powerful enough to let us play and compete, not just simulate.

And this isn’t a right or wrong thing. Publishers spend money researching what their customers want, and what they can provide to get more customers. It’s where we are as sports gamers right now. And it will always be changing. But we never get to dictate to a business owner anything. We can simply state what we will and won’t buy.

Franchise modes can come back, but I think it will require some sort of paradigm shift.

I disagree on the what's driving sports game topics. I don't necessarily think these companies are pushing gamers towards the Ultimate team type modes because that's what gamers want. I think they are pushing players towards those modes as they are much easier to monetize and bring in additional revenue. From a business perspective it makes sense to pour resources into the modes that will bring in additional money. So they know that by neglecting franchise modes they risk alienating and losing some of the franchise players, but that loss of customers is easily offset by the money brought in through the Ultimate team modes.

Everyone wants to copy 2K. How about starting with what they started with..an in-depth franchise mode with tons of customization.

Such a waste of resources.

I own FIFA and played Volta once. I know they don’t make games to satisfy just me alone.

But this ain’t it.

This concept works so much better with almost every other sport. It will be interesting to see how they make it work with football given the nature of the sport.

I have been waiting for EA to offer this for years. Literally years. I am genuinely curious about what the mode looks like and for the first time in an entire console generation I will seriously consider buying the game at launch.

There is a “paywall” aspect to MyPlayer in 2K but it pales in comparison to their equivalent to “MUT”, MyTeam. Players can still max out their individual superstar without ever having to spend a dime. I can deal with the $ part of it, I may even be happy to, if it means I can finally play football WITH my friends in a competing environment that has a more even playing field (versus that of MUT).

EA’s version of MyCourt, The One, had no micro-transactions. Neither does World of Chel and EASHL.

I assume EA will want to monetize those modes, but they aren’t yet. Same way with KO Superstar, which is actually a lot of fun.

Wow I never knew that existed lol. So many cutscenes in Longshot I just couldn't force myself to do it.


That looks pretty rough, but it's been 3 years so if it's similar hopefully it won't look so dull.

Honestly, this is what I think it'll be. The leaked screenshot shows a player in pads and helmet, but I think they'll end up going more of this route. This allows for more cosmetic upgrades instead of a uniform.



As for game play, I hope they add some cool stuff like jumping routes while you're guarding the receiver. If the receiver can use the right stick to make cuts, then let the corner use the stick to jump a route.
