To put all of these customization options including mouthpieces in an entirely new mode while not making it available in franchise mode is straight up disrespectful to everyone that has advocated for these things all of these years.

For EA to have these conversations for years on twitter and message boards about how they are working on getting these things in the game and to then only put it in the new mode shows an almost disdain for certain group of their customer base.

I'm not an equipment guy in the slightest, so what equipment that is available doesn't matter to me personally, but man I feel bad for everyone that does care about the different equipment.

I agree 10000000% that Franchise gets the short end of the stick far too often, but we can't pretend like any mode outside of the Yard has Mouthpieces. MUT, H2H, SS KO - none of them have mouthpieces. It's a huge omission by the team, but it's not really a franchise slight.

Most likely memory, the Yard has less players so they can use the mouthpieces. I agree though, it's BS, they need to make it work!

Perfectly stated, I’m a bit ashamed of myself that I assumed when I saw mouthpieces in The Yard trailer it meant they would of course be in every customization area of the game. After 16 years of asking and being ignored, I should have known better, as an aside the arm sleeves are also NBA2k quality in Yard, and still painted on in the regular game. This leads me to believe outside of some physics/animation work, literally NOTHING was changed in franchise play now from 20-21. Almost the entire dev cycle was dedicated to Yard. It makes sense, we can monetize it so we r gonna devote majority of resources to it. Sad sad state of affairs for old school videogame football heads like us. Made the game as popular as it is today and as a reward we are completely ignored, ouch.

I think that's totally fair. And to be honest I think they did a way better job with the Yard than FIFA did with VOLTA last year and this year combined, so they do have the ability to do a great job with something - even if it's not what we want them to focus on.


One thing I'm taking away from this is that they wanted to get ahead of the non-simulation 2K game that's coming soon by further cementing Madden as a place for non-simulation football. By creating this mode and doing it well they're getting ahead of any potential challenge from 2K. Especially with this linking to the mobile game. It makes sense why they chose to add it this year specifically and why they devoted so many resources to it.


They've shown that they have the resources to make a mode really good. And though it's not likely... they certainly have the ability to make franchise awesome if they ever choose to devote the same attention and care into it as they have with the Yard. I'm not getting my hopes up for that, but i certainly get why they have invested in the Yard this year from a business perspective and there's a silver lining that the team is capable of greatness if they have the dev time, resources, and actually care about the mode. Maybe one day they'll decide that mode is Franchise.

Again - they're showing that it's possible. We just need to see them bring it to the rest of the game. Lack of Memory won't be an excuse in 3 months on next gen consoles.

Kane responds when he can, it’s clear that in recent times EAs company policy has been a lot less interaction online.

I like the gameplay, just wish I could have it as a standalone with multiple season modes and real teams. Would be a pretty good modern take at "NFL Blitz" if they went that route. I always pick on EA because of their half sim/half arcade stuff. I actually would love to see modes like this included in all of their games (again with a possible DLC option to expand this mode with season mode/fantasy draft,create-a-team) as long as the real sport side actually started getting "sim" love you know? Would be a best of both world's imo. Make the real sport play more like the real sport, use these modes for the comp community who loves pop-culture and stick skills. 100% no problem with that direction at all!

I think you can go up to six guys on a side.

Mode looks fun. Not sure why o many people that know they won't like it, watched the video and confirmed that, no, they don't like it, need to post about how much they don't like something they won't play.

There are franchise threads. But, this thread is a good example of why they "handle" franchise and sim guys. They aren't making a game for you, and they don't care if you buy it. But they do want to be able to sell a game that people like without having to force their customers to defend liking the game.

For me, The Yard looks like what I hoped they would do with KO Superstar, expand on the idea. I hope gameplay holds up. It looks fast and fun, but could get unbalanced really easily. That much wide open space can lead to a lot of long TDs that get boring.

Its a mode you will need hands on to know if it feels right or not. But I love that they have it set in a way that we could see a Madden version of Court Battles from NBA Live's The One, which was my favorite mode in the game. I hope we see it at some point.

If the new consoles do offer much more space and lightning-fast load times, I'd say now is the time to offer both your "NFL Blitz" and "Madden NFL" games in the same package like they did here. You'd get a lot less complaining as there would be something for everyone in each release.

The Yard's customization options aren't for me, I know that, but I was having fun watching the gameplay. I could see myself running many many seasons of that if they offered a season mode/CaT/Fictional team league where I could manage the rosters, fantasy draft, etc.

I think building these modes out even farther to truly target the barren wasteland that is the AAA arcade sports genre is great for the industry! NHL Hitz Pro is my favorite hockey game of all time due to it's simplicity and sliders available to tune the game in a more sim direction while keeping the game accessible. The pseudo-return of those games within EA's games, with a dedication to making the core "sim" modes more sim would be a best of both worlds. I hope this is the first step in that direction.
