Re: Madden NFL 21 The Yard Gameplay Video - Player Creation, Customization and Gamepl
I think the AI/"realism" part of sports is what EA doesn't really care about. It's not marketable, so I don't really blame them. That being said, if they can make a really solid, fundamentally-sound arcade game that can be tuned for their "flagship" sports games, I'd probably end up playing the game even more than I do with these half-sim, half-"fun" games like Madden/NHL that they crank out now.
The Yard just looks straight-up fun. There's no expectations of realism, and I'd love to have season modes and franchise modes in games that don't necessarily have many expectations of realism, but can certainly be more obtainable via offline slider edits if the user pleases.Comment

Shows how easily these things can be added over the years into other modes and weren't.Comment

It can’t, they have a contract with the NFL, they have to put out a “sim” NFl game every yearComment

haha I think I agree with you. However, if their "flagship" games focused less on extreme realism (super animation-based and sort of clunky results that happen because of it) and had a more "The Yard" approach (I know it's the same engine, just hear me out lol) while offering a good slider suite to tune speeds and success rates of various things like NHL currently has, I certainly wouldn't be mad.

But during that time I remembered how much I liked all kinds of arcade sports games though the years. Instead of placing a sim expectation on any sports game, I just look for fun. I'd credit 2K8 for a lot of this thought, as i ran n online 2K8 league for several seasons. We would just do an offline draft of legends between each season.
Loved 2K8, but man that was a cheesey game. I swear so many games would hit the 4th quarter with a score like 21-17, and then end 42-41 because if you went for it, you could pass for TDs all day long in the game.
Those 4th quarters were not sim. But they were strategic and fun. We were managing the clock, looking for ways to fake each other out, and so on. It just kind of worked altogether.
Personally, I found The One in NBA live 19 to be about the best mode I've played in any sports game. It was varied with different ways to play, had an NBA side and street side, and the Court Battles I love. It's amazing how much more fun sports games became once I decided to embrace what they actually do well instead of harping on what they don't.
KO Superstar was a blast as a pick up and Play Now game. You get to draft some guys, choose a style of play, and then play an OT game with rules that makes it even more tense. Throw in that the 3-6 guys you have drafted (you get three, but draft one more after each game, until you have six for the championship) and you start to feel like it is your team.
Its fun to experiment with different strategies to build, especially based on what you know you can expect to face. I build my team to exploit weaknesses other teams allow themselves to have. But it needed a lot more to it. I hope The Yard has that.Comment

Several years ago, after realizing how frustrated I was with sports games, I decided to change my expectations. There is no AAA sports game that is actually a worthy sim. They all have serious issues, some more than others.

Superstar KO was fun, but games were super slow loading and could be way too fast. I think the yard will solve some of that frustration.Comment

Re: Madden NFL 21 The Yard Gameplay Video - Player Creation, Customization and Gamepl
I'm liking the way this looks more than the regular Madden modes. The reason being is because Madden as a simulation is just not right and probably will never be right. Every year there's something (several things) about the game that are ruin the experience for me. Playing a mode that is not trying to be serious is what I actually want from Madden at this point since they gave up on NFL Street.
I've lost all hope for the simulation side of the game.Comment

I think all EA games need to go the 2k/FIFA route of AI player instructions/custom tactics because the dynamic AI is seemingly never going to be good enough. Give us much more granular, static control over our AI, and you'll start seeing much more realistic "decisions" than what their dynamic AI can do at the moment imo.Comment

Not trying to dismiss what you guys all seem to want (franchise mode improvements), but not everyone feels that way. Personally, I never play franchise mode in any game. All I do is play online vs other users.
I'm an avid NBA 2K player as well and I've really really wanted a Madden game mode where I can create a player and use that player online... and here it is. I'm actually really happy with The Yard and looking forward to how it can be improved in the future.Comment

Didn't they say the same about helmets in pro bowl? Until it was somehow magically added?Comment

That's correct. Doubt it is a memory limitation. Watch it won't be in next-gen this year also. EA barely touched franchise during the last few years. It's not a priority for them and they will do the minimal required only when there is a Twitter uproar.Comment

EA bought the rights to a whole game mode then has willingly made it the worst mode in the game.
Even if you never touch the mode, you should see how scummy that isComment

How did EA manage to screw this up. The whole time I thought it was 6v6 all humans. It's 3 humans 3 bots. Learn from 2K duh! How stupid...
Bet you 2K makes a better Yard and does it the right way.Last edited by TheFgGoatLikesHawks; 08-20-2020, 11:14 PM.Comment

3 v 3 is really the most necessary, with a smaller field it’s just not feasible to have 6 user defenders lurking sideline to sideline. I think 2v2 has really been the perfect balance for this game mode.NFL:Miami Dolphins
NBA:Chicago Bulls
MLB:Chicago White Sox
NCAA FB:Notre Dame
NCAA BB:Notre DameComment

It’s not really bots, you take control after you throw to one of them. Same way as franchise.
