Presentation. I'm very passionate about this.
Besides some information on whether we'll actually get proper broadcast camera's for once (something I'd love to finally happen)... I'd also love to know if the commentary scripting will match TV broadcast standards. There are quite a few spots where it's simply not there right now. There are so many holes and incorrectly written lines, and a lot of it is glaringly off to the point where I pick up on it the first time I hear it, and I cringe... I find spots where there is no commentary where there should be as perplexing (lining up to punt the punter and returner are not being announced, kicking extra points and field goals the kicker isn't announced and even the distance fails to be announced most of the time... or the lack of announcing the QB dropping back or the RB getting the handoff). It's all basic broadcast commentary that in reality should've been nailed year one simply by watching a few NFL broadcasts and copying how they speak. I know there is often the thought that this can't be done, and I would say nothing to that if it were actually true. Thing is, not only can it be done, it has been done many times in the past by audio teams in different games that I won't name...
There is a certain way that football commentators speak, certain words that they use, certain spots and situations where they use them, and while I understand that there are writers on staff paid to do this with Madden, with all due respect to them, at the end of the day none of that matters. They're just not getting it done in this area and that's all there is to it. It's not a matter of opinion... either the line is broadcast or it's not. If it doesn't stand up to the side-by-side audio test of a real NFL broadcast, then it fails and it needs a rewrite, and the out of "well it's a video game" is not acceptable. If it's "Everything you see Sunday's, see it Madden NFL", then that should be the uncompromised standard.
I'd just hate for there to be upgrades but the scripting still comes up shy. I just want to hear from someone that all of these issues being pointed out haven't been pointed out in vain, and that someone is actually going fix them. When we're talking about something as simple as writing a few short lines that match what we've all heard on TV all of our lives, this shouldn't be so hard. I could literally take lines from the game, tell you why it's wrong, and then find you a broadcast line from real life and put it in front of you as a proper replacement... it's not just how things are being said, it's also the fact that lines themselves are not correct to an NFL broadcast. No matter what though, if no one actually rewrites it then what was the point of being shown the error?
