Re: Madden NFL 13 Video - Gameplay With Jim Nantz and Phil Simms In-Game Commentary

Anyone can have an opinion, I am not saying people cant. Even I said the podcast sounds better, but until you can see and hear the commentary together you cant make a solid analysis. What if the commentary is off by 3-5 seconds or its wrong. Also, maybe the podcast was jsut recorded lines before they were even implemented into the game.

Personally, I think the commentary will be better than last year , but not anything special in year one.

I really hope they stick with this new technology and announcing teams for more than two years. it seems like every two years they are switching one of the two and starting back from the beginning.

I think this is where most people defending it are coming from. At this point, we've heard and seen so little that it's absolutely impossible to judge anything. In my opinion, what we've heard so far sounds much better than what we had last year and isn't anywhere near enough to deem the commentary as a full-on failure yet.

Like with everything else it seems, June 4th is the day. After that we should be able to get plenty of more valid impressions.

I think the pace of baseball lends better to flowing commentary than more action filled sports like soccer, basketball, football, etc. That's like comparing the commentary in golf to football, when we know full well it's apples and oranges.

That said, when just showcasing the stitch tech for M13, that commentary had a nice flow but it's how it sounded during the actual game play, that was lacking. I think we all need to see how effective this new tech is at E3 before we critique the inevitable flaws it will have.
As someone who has broadcast baseball, football, and basketball professionally, basketball is the hardest to fit a color commentator into. More than 3 seconds of analysis and the play by play guy will miss a play. The 2k series does it perfectly nearly.

According to (I think it was a WSJ article) the ball is in play in a football game for 11 to 12 minutes of a 60 minute game. I've seen tv broadcasts where the color guy talks more than the play by play guy. The challenge in a radio broadcast is telling the listener what 22 guys are doing and all the potential angles you may want to describe. On tv, not so much. Football has a play clock, but in an NFL broadcast there is time for a replay and a telestrator and color commentary. The challenge of putting it into a video game is that a theme will go on for an entire drive / game. "That's why the Seahawks have big corners...to make plays like that." then 3 plays later, "again just look at the size of Browner. He's able to jump with Fitzgerald. Pete Carroll knew what he was up against in the NFC West and he knew he needed a big secondary." so on and so forth.

In baseball there is more time for a story, but the conversational element- the back and forth , is similar in baseball and football. They're more analogous than you think.

Glad to know someone else has this viewpoint. While the ball is in play they're obviously very different, but the pacing is very close.

I really thought it would go unnoticed but here's why I would like to see it again:

Repetitive ESPN radio that tells me the same real life story for a month or a repetitive Tony Bruno who talks about my franchise?

            Hmmm...

              With the same call-in questions?

And like some other people said, maybe the Tony show could have been improved with more time, but that is something we'll never know.

Sorry, just never liked Tony Bruno's addition to the game. Different strokes.........

The commentary just sounds odd, Jim Nantz has no emotion whatsoever when the teams score. They went from Gus Johnson screaming at times and silent at others to Jim Nantz sounding monotone on every score. Phil Simms sounds solid and is a major upgrade over Collinsworth but we havent seen a good play by play guy in a Madden game since Al Michaels.

Did you listen to the audio in the podcast from last week? It sounds better than this video clip. The video clip is from a older build.

I haven't seen many on here who would agree. Most people have said they thought it was better in the newer clips from the podcast. Jim Nantz is not Gus Johnson, he doesn't get as excited as him, heck no other announcer does that I know of. The newer clips sound more balanced and more like Nantz does in real life, they don't have a clip of him calling a touchdown in the new clips from the podcast either. He does show emotion in the first clip on the 1st down call.

46:58 Antonio Brown 1st Down (just an example of Nantz' balanced approach)

20:23 Lesean McCoy picks up 1st down

Yeah I'm hoping they smooth it out by the final build. I'm sure they are working on it and will continue to up till around late June early July. Play by play is one thing, but I want the commentary to feel immersive and really suck you into the game, more than anything else. Last year every game felt like a exhibition game and if they can capture the emotion from week to week and throughout the Playoffs and into the Super Bowl than I will be very satisfied. We've already heard that Jim and Phil will be aware of what is happening around them and from week to week and that is great news, far outshadows what we hear in these clips IMO.

You are very optimistic on all your posts, I will give you that

Here is my thought.....it is more likely they are showing us their current best (as that is what you should do to hype the game, anything less would be a poor move). IMO if this is what EA chose to showcase, commentary could be a miss again this year. It doesn't sound bad to me, but it just sounds acceptable, alright. nothing to get excited about. Better then last year? I certainly hope so!!

Only time will tell. Personally, I don't expect to be blown away, but that is only because of their track record and the clips I have heard so far. A person really can't say it will be any better then what they show us. That would just be wishful thinking.

I'll be honest if it wasn't for the fact that it was a new development team I probably would be more skeptical. This is the first year this team has made a Madden game, so I'm giving them the benefit of the doubt. Rest assured if I'm not happy come August, EA devs will know it before anyone, but that's August not May.
