Re: Attention to detail and the "little things" in the Madden franchise.

The little things:

Make tackling a little more dynamic and less dramatic. In otherwords, I would like to see more true to life tackling. I want to see smaller players go after large runner's legs and less of the up high tackling. You do this with blocking, cut blocks. Why can't we see that same type of interaction in tackling? Remove the WWF tackling, tone it down, so every hit is not a big hit. Sliders help with this somewhat.

Please work on the offensive line interaction. Make it more true to life and make weight and strength matter. A start would be removing the swim move or making it less effective. Powerful Pass rushers need to push the opposing linemen into the backfield. This occurs sometimes with defensive ends, but I would like to see it with the defensive tackles and linebackers as well.

Add the specific quarterback signature throwing motions back to the game as well. This makes a world of difference. You had it right with 2012.

Add 2012 replay system back to the game and expand upon it. We need to see replays from various camera angles. The 2013 replay system gets so repetitive and is just a time waster. You were headed in the right direction with the 2012 replays.

Ground the running backs and remove the floaty, twitchy running. Players need to footplant and momentum needs to matter. I also like the idea of adding an animation that allows the running back to put his hand on the back of another player and push the pile, or use it to bounce to the outside.

Fix the penalties - The penalty system has not worked properly for years. We need more types of penalties. Change clipping to block in the back. It erks me everytime I hear "clipping" Let's see some defensive and offensive pass interference calls please. I would also like to see unnecessary roughness penalties from time to time.

Add a halftime show similar to what 2k did with 2k5. I do not see why this has not been added. It adds great immersion to the game to see highlights from other games around the league.

Give us the ability to save as many replays as our hard drives allow. You may limit how many we can upload, that is understandable, but replays are a big deal to me. I love to save my franchise and review it over the course of the year. 10 replays a game is not enough.

Allow us to add our own stadiums sounds, similar to what NCAA did with their game. This would help us to build our own stadium environment.

Dynamic weather is possible, because there are other games that have accomplished this. I would love to play a game that started overcast, and ended with precipitation. Gosh, this would be huge. Weather needs to have more of an effect on game play other than slipping or sliding. Wind should have an effect on the game as well. Why even add a wind meter or windsocks to a game if wind isn't going to have an effect? In a rain or snow game, the ball needs to feel heavier and have less velocity. Have you ever thrown a wet football? It should be hard to pass in these games and it should be more difficult for players to hold onto the ball.

Add mouthpieces - I am not a huge equipment guy, but these should be in.

There is no need to work on running animations at this point. They actually need to regress back to what they were in 12. You had them perfect. Threshold needs to work like it did back in 12 as well.

Please make the sliders work so we can adjust the game to fit our liking.

Quit adding all the fluff to the games and give us the flexibilty back we had in 2012. Game play should be priority always.

Coaches need their headsets

Give us back the variety of camera angles we had in 12.

In game saves? Why Not?

Give us the ability to assign our matchups. We had it in 12

I would like to see more applicable highlights at the end of the game. If it is not possible for the CPU to assign which plays should be shown, give us the ability to mark certain plays or create a playlist of plays to be shown at the end of the game.

Special Teams needs to be worked hard. CPU returners need to be more effective, and should be able to use the field. I want to see more returners use the width of the field, and be more dangerous overall. Blocked punts and field goals need to return to the game. Special teams alone, can win or lose a game. This is a huge aspect of the game, that needs a lot of work.

Gosh, that is all I can think of for now:

Doesn't exactly seem like the 'little things' are what's being posted in this thread, but I digress.

Signature animations are one of the little things that seem to be overlooked. They work OK now I believe, but still not as well as they have in years past. They need to be made a priority and expanded upon.

As far as little things go, I really don't think M12 gets the credit it deserved for it's attention to detail. The camera cuts were sweet, player equipment accuracy was top notch through the use of roster updates, and uniform/helmet degradation was on point -- among other things.

While the foundation of the game is stronger in M13, I thought M12 placed more emphasis on details.

Madden puts time into the big event type animations - the catch especially. But there is no variety or depth for subtleties of interactions in between, such as breaking off of press coverage, struggling at the point of attack by linemen, etc. It makes for a choppy look to the game, where figures that move a bit like robots suddenly make a highlight reel athletic play. And then when the play is over they trip and fall on their own feet.

I know that last part is just a side effect of first year with collision physics, but is we're talking about the little things, these visuals all add up.
I agree. This is something All pro and 2K basketball does very well.

I applaud Emmdotfrisk for creating this thread and trying to seperate himself from past EA CS guys that have come and gone before. I hope this thread has an affect on not only this years game but all games going forward.

The little things to me are Penalties: OPI-DPI, more diversity in the calls in a given game, there are lots of penalties I would like to see but those are the 2 that show up the least.

One more little thing I would like to mention is with player movement: I would like to see signature running styles for the stars in each postion.

There are others but I don't have time to think about them ATM I have to work soon.

lol, I was thinking the same thing but at least it gives a central reference point for M14.

Also, Mods or whoever controls what threads are "sticky", I see this thread was and thanks but can we also get http://www.operationsports.com/forum...real-life.html sticky as well?

Reason being, it has all the ideas neatly packaged into the OP, for a nice direct reference point, where many of the "big things" have already been laid out.

How CPU handle depth charts? switching LG to RG and RG to LG, make no sense.
Preseason games are a mess because how the cpu handdle Depth charts.

Even though, not sure if these are details.

Formation subs
Bring back the chain gang (again),
Bring back the old in-franchise practice (exactly as NCAAF has it now and how it was last year)
Allow us to edit everything, play any game on the league schedule (like last year)
The old newspaper/news thing that the PS2 franchises had
Bring back the gameplan feature that 06/07 had for PS2
Make it so that we dont have to reset playcalling to conventional before every single game in CCM
Give us the option to import our rookies again
Make a bigger selection of players imported so we dont need to go back to those unrealistic UDFAs from 12,
Edit and save or create uniforms within franchise (for all 32 teams even if only one is user controled--again exactly like the PS2 days),
Change positions to what they really are like instead of LE/RE, change it to strong side/weak side on the depth chart, but on roster management, they can be simply listed as general DE's, same thing with LB's, Strong/Weak instead of ROLB/LOLB,
Keep the play clock options that we have now in 13, its perfect
Let us handle no huddle like it is in NCAA, with access to the whole playbook,
Bring back surprise on-side kick
Practice squad would be legit,
Let us change player's positions,
Perhaps either spread ratings out, or remove the overall rating, make a player's physical ratings (speed, acc, Throw Power, Kick Power, etc) measured so that it translates in the game (if a player runs a 4.3 40yd in real life in pads, then instead of translating that to a 99 or whatever, make it so that he runs 40 yds in 4.3 on the field in-game) and with the unphysical ratins (Throw Accuracy, Catch, Carry etc).
Perhaps make season performance matter, if a 70 OVR rookie runs for 1800 yds in a season, he should at least be given an 80 OVR then if he does it again, give him an elite rating, or if an elite player has a bad year, lower his ratings.
Things like Catch, Carry, Throw/Kick Accuracy should be almost directly dynamic season to season based on simulated stats.
Revamp the slider and tendencies to mirror MLB 2K or NBA 2K,
Vastly improve AI intelligence overall, in every category,
Perhaps contract with CBS, FOX, NBC, ESPN and give us a choice of TV broadcast with different announcers for each (like NCAAB 10)
When in a franchise game, in between a play or whatever, have the game of the week or next weeks game of the week advertised (like MLB 2K and NBA 2K)
Essentially, bring back absolutely everything from the PS2 days, exactly how it was, apply the next gen graphics
Also, the Truck/Highlight stick should be brought back
Change the menu system within CCM (everything is in so many different places one cant keep track)
Either remove the Long Snapper from the depth chart or actually specialize players for the LS position (it does make a difference in real life)
Make sure that ALL NFL penalties are in the game, no matter how small the rule, add it. Unnecessary roughness, intentional grounding, PASS INTERFERENCE
Edit playbooks, create playbooks, create plays, etc from within CCM.
Change CCM to where you can either play as a player (only yours) a coach/coordinator (only call plays) or owner where basically you do everything you got to do in the old franchises, especially the way things were in the PS2 days
Make the in-game stadium scoreboards as scoreboars and not just changing them to video boards, gives stadiums a more realistic look (again as it was in the PS2 days)

If you take absolutely everything from the PS2 days, apply the graphics of this gen, Madden will likely be as great as NBA 2K. This is as far as I can go off the top of my head. Thank You.

It's all about match ups;and with the camera the way it is now you can't tell if your Tight end is covered by a defensiveback or a linebacker PRESNAP.We should be able to see the opposing teams personnell threats PRESNAP," so we can adjust our play calling accordingly".However with the camera view the way it is now, we can't because the VIEW limits our decision making presnap.Deciding if we should be leary of the opposing teams personnel or take advantage of the other teams personnel/match up is clearly a shot in the dark .Also I've succesfully gotten Mike Young/Creative director to change the zoom view for 13 for this one reason;only to be let down with how low the camera angle is in it's current state "just can't get any sence and visual depth of the field during play".In a nut shell the zoom cam is to low to the ground,it needs to be lifted and tilted some.Hard 2 sense and visually see the depth of the field. Got a question for you Mr.EmmdotFrisk ;Would you agree not being able to visually see the diffirence in the defensive personell " Linebackers in particular" PRESNAP is hurting the standard cam coming from a strategical Point Of View?

Re: Attention to detail and the "little things" in the Madden franchise.

Special teams attention is another "little thing" area. Some of this has been brought up, but:

what if there was such a thing as a "gunner" position, with some rating associated with it, as in kick return?

what if there could be plays called for blocking schemes on returns that were nore than just right/left/center?

what if the long snapper position actually mattered? After all, the Giants carry DeOssie as just a LS, though the game has put him as a position player with a 40-something rating. He's a OLB otherwise, but I think the game had him as a TE. Well, that's a guy that just has to be cut, cap hit and all. But what if the LS was a ST position, the way KR and PR are, with a skill rating for LS, and the position mattered enough to maybe carry a guy on the roster for it?

That would mean there would have to be more animations and outcomes for the actual snap of the ball, the hold and the kick.

As others have said, the whole return game is too scripted and vanilla, especially for the CPU returning. Plus, the frequency of penalties on KR's is way to high, relative to other plays in the game. Tune the penalties down and you get almost not penalties for the whole game.

The whole ST gameplay process is pretty flat and one dimensional.

Re: Attention to detail and the "little things" in the Madden franchise.

Ball trajectory on kicks. It's this unrealistic arc, which will NEVER get blocked at the LOS, because it takes off upward right away. This trajectory is dependant upon the distance too, as kickers can chip it more when they are closer, but from long range require more power...but should be more susceptible to a block. Further more, the ball shouldn't go on a straight line path either...

No FG Blocks up the middle, which is where the majority of blocks come from.

Punt blocks, part of real life, not part of Madden save for a kick from your own 1.

Why when my opponent is in onside kick, I get told "kickoff" and have no idea? Kind of ridiculous to not know this.

Wind speed hasn't been correct for years.

Players sticking the ball out for 1st downs when they rush out of bounds near the marker, why the heck not?

Why do trailing DB's on streaks jump straight up in the air to attack balls. You're running full sprint, this is not realistic. You're not jumping upwards in a full sprint.

DB's need to get their hands inside the WR to try and strip on a catch attempt.

QB's no longer get injured apparently.

Practice roster, where is it?

Practices don't even make sense. XP rewards are ridiculously balanced. Where's options to work with the 2nd and 3rd team? Why's everyone in pads? Where are my drills?

Why do TE's dominate this game? Why can't LB's cover these guys at all?

Where are the knockdowns at the LOS? CPU controlled DL rarely get their hands up.

Whole penalty system has been stagnant since they were originally added to the game. What's up with that? Why do holding calls always end up being spot fouls leading to random 1st and 16s? Why do penalties that happen after first downs are earned, revert back because the penalty yardage comes back behind the initial first down marker?

Why are teams 3-3 ahead of teams that are 4-3 in the standings right now?

Are divisional seedings fixed yet? Or is that a wonderful surprising coming to Online CC's in the near future?

Why does pink gear not happen during october in game but october in real life?

Why does the pre-season have QB's playing WR and WR's playing DB? Kickers who can't kick?

Why does every stat category sort the wrong way the first time you try and sort?

Why aren't draft class more random? Why are draft class guides still possible?

Why do you include ratings that don't work, into the game (Run/Pass block strength and footwork. Looman/Moore stated they do nothing, why are they there confusing people who don't know?)

Why can't we have various broadcast overlays? NFC games, AFC games, night games? You did the sepia old school look before, what's up with this?

Why does no huddle continue to be unrealistic? Why do QB's have telepathy to make all kinds of changes in an instant at the LOS?

Why do QB/WR's have telepathy with playmaker?

Why don't DE's contain the outside?

Where are the signature throwing animations? Signature running? Things we've seen before?

Team specific audio/game chants? Once were there, seem to be gone now.

Where's mouthpeices?

Where's changing weather? Why does it just rain or not? Why can't it come and go?

Why can't I save replays anymore?

Why aren't challenged plays entirely reviewed? It's as if they choose the one aspect of the play to look at and that's it?

Why are menus so bloated? The DDP menus? We don't need giant pictures of players, just put a list there of everyone. No scrolling. Even the stat menus in the CC mode itself are wasting so much space. Condense your information please.

Why can't plays at the end of quarter/2min warning be challenged? You always get denied the ability to.

When the game is over and I kneel out, why do me and my opponent have to sit there for 40 seconds and twiddle our thumbs? The game is over!

Will Accel Clock work inside 2 minutes if it ever returns? It's absurd to watch how in mere seconds you can run a play, huddle, call a play and be lined up.

Further to that previous point, gameflow totally borks you as well. Why keep timeouts? Get tackled inside FG range with 5 seconds to go? no problem. Gameflow pops up, hit FG, and 1 second later you're lined up to snap the kick.

Why do commentators talk about real life NFL? Previous season results that aren't part of the game you are playing. Makes no sense.

Why are depth charts still unchanged? Why can't they have more slots in them for pre-season? Why am I forced to adhere to having a fullback?

Why can't I have a separate screen from player editing to handle jersey numbers? What about excluding retired ones? How about retiring numbers down the road, like #12 in New England or #18 in Indianapolis will be?

Why do players run through the walls of the stadium and disappear?

Why can't I have gameplans before the game? Telling my D to play a team tight, or inside, or cheat to the run, etc? Instead of hammering a myriad of button combos every. single. play?

Where's the K ball guy?

Why can't we have legitmate spots done by the in game ref crew? Rather than just seeing an indicator to down/distance? Have the spot the ball and measure?

Commercial timeouts (not literally), just moments between drives where's it noted by the commentators that it happens, but for purposes of stamina recovery?

Team specific touches? Minutemen in NE? Cheeseheads in GB? Dallas having excellent road support?

Fumbled snaps?

Punt attempts where the ball sails over the punters head (ala the Oakland special)

Stamina effects of playing at Mile High in Denver?

Stamina effects of playing a short week? Or long travel? London game?

Bye week having positive or negative effects?

Players having to "learn" playbooks, rather than trading star QB's and them knowing whatever you want them to know, having instant chemistry with everyone. Chemistry, where is it?

Pro Bowl helmets.

I think those are all small things, maybe not. I tried. Looking forward to seeing Emm's influence on all this tho. No pressure or anything.

i would like to be able to trade for a player from the roster screen. Also, i'd like to be able to see the entire nfl by position on the roster screen. similar to how it shows on the stats screen when you have 'nfl' selected as your team.

it would help in comparing all players at any given position.

thanks for listening.

Okay, I know I have to be careful on this thread (and boo to probie for being the first to complain unless that was just a clever way to list Wind Direction as his little thing) but would no user-control of players (including ST) be a little thing?

I'll hold off on posting anything else until I hear back on that
