[QUOTE=shttymcgee;2044424247]I understand what you're getting at, but I'm going to play devil's advocate with your specific example.

Why would the scenario (dropping down the SS) change you the MLB is for the protection? The offensive formation is the first determining factor, because the defense must match the formation deployment.

In the example that Coach Billick was using, sure, it makes sense to block it that way.

In the example I gave (off of yours, which you obviously got from the video), I was talking about a 6 man protection scheme, with a back free-releasing strong. The video was a 7 man scheme, which is a big difference.

You're right that who the offense ID's as the "mike" is not necessarily who we would call the MLB.

In my other post, I tried to show how the formation/route distribution (obviously I wasn't clear enough, but I didn't want to write a book about it) is the first step in determining how the protection is going to be set; and that the defense's response to that is what ultimately determines how you're going to block it.

Even in the video, Coach Billick uses the example that the fictional team doesn't bring pressure weak with that look. If the SS is walking down to cover the TE, so the defense can bring weak pressure....

It's all a guessing game, but both sides are trying to make the guesses as educated as possible.
