Re: Calling all OSers who are interested - SECElit3's And Community FBG Rerated R...
If you follow the FBG Ratings thread on the main Madden page here at OS, you will notice that the STR ratings are the result of a combination of the 1RM for bench and squat for every player. This is derived per my work with the kinesiology department at the University of Minnesota.
Jarius Byrd is an extremely strong player for his size. His 1RM in the bench is 304lbs. His 1RM in the squat is 555lbs.
Mario Williams, although heavier than Byrd 85lbs, has posted a 1Rm in the bench of 331lbs and a 1RM in the squat of 450lbs.
Also, keep in mind that although Williams did 35 reps at 225 at the combine in 2006 and Byrd only did 15 at his pro day, the Bench Test at the combine and pro days is actually a better measure for upper body muscular endurance than overall strength. This explains the small advantage that Williams has in the 1RM over Byrd. Where Byrd is actually stronger than Williams, is in his lower body, noted by the squat effort of 105lbs more.
In addition, Williams is currently in an Injury status of 0.3, which means he is likely at only 30% of his usual ability due to the injury. His injury (the wrist) likely has affected his bench measure, considering that coming out of college, his 1RM in the bench was 450lbs. However, his 1RM in the squat coming out of college was only 320lbs (http://www.nfldraftscout.com/members...php?pyid=11478), which tells us that his squat has actually increased since college. The only issue now is his wrist injury, which is clearly affecting his ability to lift, and thus, his STR attribute.
I urge you to read the FBG Ratings thread to get a better understanding of how the ratings actually work.Dan B.

There is a lot of scholarly work to support this. I recommend the works by Arce, Arnold, Bale, Graham, O'Shea, Schmidt, and Seiler. All have been or are currently employed by research universities around the world for their work in kineseology, kinematics, biomechanics, sports science, and sports nutrition.Dan B.

The only consideration we make is for the 1RM and any other factors including injuries.Dan B.

No. The bench test at the combine and pro days is not as accurate a measure for determining overall upper body strength as the 1RM in the bench press (a combination lift, meant for max effort, that utilizes multiple muscle groups). Since it is not as accurate of an indicator, we do not use it.

Powerlifting (which is traditionally 1RM competitions) is dominated by short, stubby frames. You don't need to consult with the kinesiology dept to see why this is: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Work_(physics)Comment

I understand that there's no end to how accurate rosters can be and so at a certain point we have to accept limitations, but length of limbs is too significant to overlook.
BTW, how do we see their injury status on the website?Comment

I'm not talking about reps, this goes for 1RM as well...
