Between now and 2026 (when the sim license might be up for bid again), I think it'll be something where 2k football focuses on re-restasblishing themselves in the football-gaming market with one of their "non-sim" titles offering a close enough glimpse at what a true simulation-style NFL title might look like if they were allowed to make one.

Now, they might release one of their titles annually but I don't see it happening because there's no pressure on them to do so, especially on the level that EA/Tiburon have to ship Madden every year to offset exclusivity costs, make profits and appease an expectant fanbase. 2k has a lot more freedom in that regard.

One can safely assume WWE Battlegrounds was in development, at the minimum conceptually, well before WWE 2K20 ever released, let alone be critically panned. That's especially considering two different studios, Visual Concepts and Saber Ineractive, worked on those titles.

Whether Battlegrounds is released again or not, there is no way it was developmentally improvised in the wake of the WWE 2k20 debacle.
I was simply talking about whatever they are gonna release. NFL 2K23 Playgrounds or whatever the non-sim game will be. Which would be the game we basically know is coming. I believe it will be a yearly release to compete as much as possible with Madden.

I will do some more research on Battlegrounds if I can. It may have been in development and maybe planned as a stand-alone release some other time before it took the spot of WWE 2K21.

It's definitely going to be interesting to see what 2K comes up with. I've said this before but the only thing that gives me pause about a full on Playgrounds/Street/Jam, etc. game is the NFLPA license and the exclusion of offensive and defensive linemen in a super arcade like game.

A game more along the lines of a MLB BIGS might be a better possibility.

Re: This Madden 64 article could be a hint

I want a 2k football game more than anybody but I fully expect NFL Playgrounds first. Whatever it is that involves the NFL, I want it to succeed, this is 2k's first steps in re-establishing a relationship with the NFL and the best way to do that is to provide a game that makes money.

As far as AP2k23 goes, I actually think it would sell well, especially if they create a MyPark type mode along with a MyTeam mode. The biggest difference between now and 2007 is there is more money to be made in the new monetized modes. So you could make up for any sales not met as far as copies of the game goes. It's also a different environment, there is a very large crowd of fed up Madden players ready to try something new. AP2k8 came out around the same time as Madden 08, arguably the greatest Madden game ever made.

Again, I'm not saying this will happen. I'm just saying it's not a ridiculous idea, there is a way to make money and to go ahead and have a simulation foundation in place for when the license is up.

                    here is my 02 cents

we need both madden and 2k

and i don't think the NFL will even think of someone else until

                    1 madden dies
2 owners like jerry jones robert kraft age out and younger owners that did not know madden start to own teams
3 had 2k not sold the game for 20 bucks in 2004 they very likey wouild had overtook madden by 2008 and the nfl has just in the the last 2years have foregave 2k for that mistake in 04

What is the definition of a "simulation". Why can't they just put out a football game and just claim it's not a sim? Has the NFL put out a list of requirements as to what defines the licensing of a game as a sim or not?

Because I could make a strong argument madden, even on "sim" mode, is anything but a sim.

The NFL, EA, 2k, and all representatives involved likely (99.99% likely) have a black and white list of things 2k can and cannot do. Things that are exclusive to a "sim" game.

Their definition of sim may not align with ours completely. It could be stated that simply having 4 downs is something 2k cannot have. It may be 11 vs 11 is the only thing restricted. We don't know, but the parties that need to know do know. We will likely have a good idea of what is and isn't allowed when we actually see something tangible with the game.

Whatever is missing and keeping the game from being authentic will be something we can safely assume isn't allowed. If the game isn't 11 vs 11 for example, it'll be safe to assume 2k cannot do that or they would be sim.

Kraft and Jerrah are two of the few that care enough about the League, who may actually be listening to disgusted Madden fans. We need to be rid of useless tools like Spanos, Mike Brown, and the Fords, who are just cashing checks.

Didn't 2k slash their price after the exclusive license was signed?

2k5 was released at $19.99 in July 2004, the Exclusive Deal was signed in December 2004.

Acclaim grabbed all the NFL licensing rights for its NFL QB Club '98 early and EA was left playing catch up. However, EA did manage to get ahold of the NFLPA (NFL Players Associaion) so real player names are present in the game.

They didn't have the restriction that 2k has with this new deal that prohibits them from creating a simulation game.
