Is there anyway to create your own plays?

I realise you can create your own custom playbook by choosing plays from other teams playbooks but I was wondering if it's possible to actually create your own plays? i.e. allow you to position players in certain positions and instruct each player as to which route to run or where to block etc.

By the way I'm not talking about pre-snap (when you can audible players to certain positions and run routes), I'm talking about doing this within the menus instead.

The reason I ask this is because I was playing some old Amiga games (as you do) and I decided to pop in Tom Landry's Football. The game was made in the early 90s and basically it works in a similar way to the 'coach mode' in the 2K series. In other words you can't play the games, you can only watch your tactics play out in front of you (it actually had better graphics than Madden at the time but I digress). Some screenshots below if you're interested.

The game actually allows you to create your own custom plays. It was really well done and such a simple feature I just wondered if the 2K series has this? In fact does any recent football game allow you to do this?

Wow, those graphics did look better than Madden back then. All the way up to the detailed sideline. Anyway, only game I cant think of that let you create your own plays was Madden on current gen although I think they eliminated that feature as well for the last few years.

What are you talking about, that sideline looks better than Madden now!!! They don't even pull out the chains on 4th & short.

Madden 2005 will let you create plays for a custom playbook and use it in franchise mode. Madden 2006 will let you create plays for a custom playbook, but you CAN'T use it in franchise mode.

Hot route and motion 2-3 players in a play, and you've essentially created your own new play. Try this. Take one favorite play. Go into practice and try every the variation of hot routes and motioning you're able to perform. At some point you'll come up a combination of moves that makes you feel "This play works for me." Then practice it a number of times until the motioning and hot routing for that play becomes second nature. Presto: created play.

It's actually exciting doing that, because you're working against the clock, trying to get all the motioning and hot routes called. Plus you feel like Peyton Manning!

Yep. And I still get a delay-of-game penalty or have to call a quick timeout one or two times per game while orchestrating everything, just like Peyton!

Re: Is there anyway to create your own plays?

Not having a create-a-play in this game doesn't bother me at all. I've got a custome playbook, and there are so many plays to choose from that you don't really need to create your own.

I also do what the others have already mentioned. I have a couple plays in my playbook that I ALWAYS change 1-2 guys' routes on, so it's essentially my own play.

It's really amazing how many different formations and plays 2k5 has...on both sides of the ball. Everytime I revert back to Madden (I know, why would I want to do that), it astounds me how limited the playbooks are in comparison to 2K5.

                    Yep, you're spot-on, Matt.

One of my favorite things to do is to run a slot receiver in motion to the other side of the field when the defense is playing zone and then run him on a quick out or outside slant Hot Route when the other receiver on that side is covered by the CB. Usually the Hot Route is very effective because the linebacker who is near the Hot Routed receiver can't stay with him. It's even more effective when that linebacker is blitzing, leaving the Hot Routed receiver wide open!

NFL 2K5 is a phenomenal game. It is the pinnacle of football videogaming, in my opinion.

                    Take care,

I pretty much agree with you guy also, there are many many varations to the plays already there and I try to use a variety of formation, motions ect.

Thats why I play at 10 minutes I need that time to get some match-ups or blitz pick-ups before that snap and don't forget the "Hot" routes!

There is a fifth dimension beyond that which is known to man. It is a dimension as vast as space and as timeless as infinity. It is the middle ground between light and shadow, between science and superstition, and it lies between the pit of man's fears and the summit of his knowledge. This is the dimension of imagination. It is an area which we call … The Twilight Zone aka "Jack Bauer".
