To IRISH,
Welcome to the wonderful, wonderful, world of 2K football. I am happy that you gave this game a chance. YOu are playing this on the PS2..... If you play it on the Xbox things go through the roof because you can get the updated rosters.
Presentation wise, 2k5 is far and away the best football game for presentation. Two of these are:
1) Dynamic halftime show with replay highlights (during season and franchise mode, you would get a recap of all NFL games for the entire week...including the game you just played!!!!!).
2) Creating your own stadium music
3) Choosing touchdown celebrations
I currently own Madden 09 on xbox360, and I hardly play it. When I want to play a game of football I put in NFL2k5.
Aside from the presentation though there are some gameplay mechanics that are muh better than Madden:
1) OL/DL interactions
2) Running game (forcing you to be patient and look for holes)
3) Passing game (A pocket ACTAULLY forms and you need to stay in it). Passing is VERY much dependent on timing. You need to make the pass around the time the QB completes the number of dropback steps in the play.
4) Tackling - TRUE gang/tackling (Madden still does not really have this yet). It usually takes more than 1 person to bring someone down...and this is how it really is in real life.
The main problem with the Madden sheep is that people have been playing Madden for so long that their style of play has been ingrained into people that it is REAL football.
Things in Madden that people accept as realistic:
1) QB Dropbacks: This is my biggest pet peeve. Players manually drop their QB back a ridiculous amount to make passes. They have to do this because there is no "pocket" in Madden. The OL/DL simply is a line that a defender breaks. Also, QB's have ridiculous accuracy and can throw from anywhere. Try that in 2k5 and you will get killed.
2) Running game: For years people would just turbo run and then spin to get free.... In 2k, you HAVE to look for holes. In 2k you are rewarded the most by allowing your blockers to help you. This is what you see in real life.
3) Jet packing DB's linebackers for picks/interceptions
4) Tackling: Gang-tackling is what you see in the NFL. 2k Makes you decide how you are going to attempt to take someone down. You can go fro a "wrap" tackle where you try to grab onto them. This slows them down and allows for another defender to help clean it up.... or you can try to dive at them but you are highly like to miss. With the wrapup tackle the ball-handler may still get an extra yard or two. In Madden it is pretty much all or nothing.
I could go on and on but it really is pointless. If 2k would release a football game using the APF/2k engine with full customization it would be ridiculous.
Here's hoping that they do that.
