Is there a certain way to lay it on the bottom of the pot? Like with the painted side facing up at you or at the bottom of the pot? Or does it not matter at all?

There is another way other than boiling...it may be free or it may cost you. Here we go:

      2 questions for you:

      1. When did you get your Xbox? If at Launch or relatively close, proceed to question 2

      2. What does your drive tray look like?

      a. A U-Shaped Tray
      b. A Circular-Like Tray
      c. A Tray with 2 circles in the front left and right

If you answered "a" to the 2nd question, best advice is to call 1-800-4MY-XBOX and see if they can fix your drive for free. If you have a warranty you should be good to go. The turnaround time is quite good from what I hear.

WARNING: They may tell you that you have to pay $100+ for the fix. Then it's up to you whether it is worth it or if you should just return your Xbox to EB or something (they were having a $100 turn-in deal) and get a new one for cheaper than it would cost to fix the old one. EB will go and refurbish yours of course.

I've done some work with DVD tech recently, and I can tell you that it is likely that if you are having a dirty disc error with ESPN only, it is a disc manufacturing problem, not a problem with your machine. I had the same problem the first time I put the disc in my Xbox. Given that I haven't had any problems with other discs, and after having inspected the disc itself, I'm pretty confident it's a problem with the discs.

When DVDs are manufactured (including game DVDs), sometimes the process leaves a thin film on the disc that interferes with the laser's ability to read it. This is more common with low cost manufacturing techniques (like those often used used to create demo discs). The boiling solution is simply one of a number of ways to remove the film. Sometimes the film is so thick that you can see it when you breathe hot air on the disc. After you wipe it off (or boil it or whatever), the surface of the disc will be noticeably different.

Of course, if you get dirty disc errors with multiple games, it's more likely your machine is either dusty or has a defective laser.

I might returning my disc because I think there are still problems with it (sometimes the commentary is a bit delayed, and on cutscenes sometimes the graphics stutter/slowdown when the disc is being accessed for commentary or an overlay--anyone else seen this on the Xbox version?).

            Hope this helps.
