My tips on First Person Mode

I originally posted this on another site

    ************************************************

I have read some posts about people having difficulty playing certain positions on FP mode(namely coverage on defense and reciever on offense).

    Tip 1) Getting better coverage

On defense the default focal point is the ball. If you try to look around, you will be doing it from a refernce point of the ball. This is okay if you are playing DL, but it is what confuses you if you are in coverage. Hold down the white button to lock on to the person you are covering, if you want to look back at the qb, just quickly release the button and the player will look back at the ball.

    Tip 2) Selecting defensive player.

If you want to get the right defender before the snap, instead of just pressing B or Y. Pull back the screen with the right trigger, you can cycle through the players alot faster that way.

    Tip3) Improving QB skills

Let the qb take the designed drop back with out you controlling him. Only control what reciever the qb is looking at, and pay attention to the danger meter. This decreases confusion and allows you to make better adjustments in the pocket. By looking at the replay, I realized many of my sacks could have been avoided by simply stepping into the pocket.

    Just a suggestion)

Try not to be in control of everything. I found I had a better time when I turned the automatic reciever switch off. I was just playing qb and after one of my reciever caught the ball. I found myself talking to the tv telling him to get the first. It makes the game feel like you are part of the team. I also found that this is true for defense. Even though I was not apart of the play on every down, I thought I had a much better time picking a player and staying with him the whole play. This definately gave me a more life like felling.

Anyway, that is my first post- please give me some feedback or post your own suggestions for FP.

Excellent tips, bills... I'm heading home from the office in a minute and will keep them in mind.

Re: My tips on First Person Mode

Good tips billsbillsbills, and I agree with much of what you have posted. The only major difference I see is that I like to keep the automatic receiver switch on, as I prefer to manually catch the ball for every pass play. I guess it's the old NFL 2K style in me.

There's so much I want to add here that I don't know where to begin. FPF is an outstanding feature, and I admit that I've played ESPN NFL Football this way far more than normal mode whenever I'm offline. I am mainly in control of either the WLB or SLB whenever I feel like fighting off the tight end. I get to make a lot of clean-up assist tackles on running plays and short pass completions plus bring the heat to the QB on some blitzes. On defensive side of the ball, LB is definitely where the action is at. Anyway, here is a few tips I can offer to those playing FPF:

          - If you're in man coverage, look and focus only at the man you're assigned to cover (hold down white button) and forget about everyone else on the field.

          - If you're in zone coverage, drop back in your assigned space, stay put, then keep one eye at any receivers coming into your area and your other eye on the quarterback. If you're covering underneath with a linebacker, creep behind the receiver running a crossing route in your area and get ready to crush him the moment they catch the ball. If you're deep zone with a safety or cornerback, then make sure you're "deeper than the deepest" (check the reference guide for the meaning).

          - While dropping back to pass, briefly look side to side for LBs and/or DBs who are on a delayed blitz. Also keep an eye out on where the safeties are away from the line of scrimmage, as some plays have them moving to cover an area underneath after the snap. It can help to take a shot at throwing the ball down the field behind him if you know the other safety is not close enough to break up the play.

          - Visualize a ticking clock in your head that lets you know how long you are holding on to the football while standing inside the pocket. The ball should be on its way to a receiver by the time you get to four seconds. If not, better find a way to buy more time (i.e. calmly moving around inside the pocket whenver controlling a pocket passer, or darting outside the pocket to make something happen whenever controlling a mobile QB), or else there will be trouble.

On an unrelated note, one gripe I have come across is when the computer briefly takes over control of my QB once I let it drop back for me. When I survey the field for a couple of seconds without moving the QB, the CPU will automatically move the QB around and shuffle his feet and screw up the accuracy of some of my passes. So I find it helpful to tap the left thumbstick every now and then to prevent that from happening.

                      WOW...you have not lived until.....

you play FPF as the Dolphins in their Alt. White on white at the San Diego in the Powder Blue....afternoon...light rain...WOW.....beautiful...the lights...the lightening.

Playing as Zach, keying on LT2 as he drops into the flat and blowing by the blocker and leveling him just as he catches the screen...awesome...just like old times.

Only problem is...i get motion sickness on most FPS and this is no exception...i have to keep taking breaks and hitting replay as soon as possible.

                      I can't stop though...thanks for the tips...they help.
