Leagues do add a layer of policing to discourage cheesing, pausing, quitting, etc.

The more cheesing and quitting there is in random exhibition games, the more people will flock to leagues and the more they'll be motivated to stay in the leagues.

Developers can encourage people to join leagues by putting in features like online leagues and ultimately online franchises. Since most sports gamers like things like stat-tracking and franchise mode, offering stat-tracking for online games through online leagues and franchises would be an incentive for people to play within the context of leagues, where there could be policing of how people play.

Thanks all for the responses. Oil Chemist I got your friend request and put you on there. I initially purchased NFL Fever for the leagues thinking that it was the way to go (and the Read and Lead system is definately the best passing system available although the rest of the game is just ok), but unfortunately it is almost impossible to get a game online (not enough players I guess), and all of the leagues that I tried to join got dissolved because there weren't enough players. Frustrated, I went out and got ESPN to give this a shot (I had been a Madden guy, pc the last couple of years for online play), and I have to say I really like the game other than the fact that I have been unlucky and gotten some bad opponents online. I got in a good game last night (can't remember the guy's name) and you will see me for at least a little longer. Thanks again.
