Re: Who run the 4-6 defense in espn football

Right but the difference is the formation in the game called "Bear" is 43 Bear. It is not the 46 defense. The base alignment is off for it to be a 46. I'm going to give you the base alignment of the 46 defense vs an I formation and go compare it to what's in the game and you will see it aint the 46. However, it IS the 43 Bear.

Notice in the traditional alignment you have 6 guys all on the line of scrimmage
Base 46 without adjustments vs I Pro
SOLB - lines his inside foot on the outside foot of TE on the line of scrimmage
WOLB - lines out with his outside foot on the Tight End
MLB - head up strong offensive tackle 4.5 yds off the line of scrimmage
LDE - shades outside shoulder of strong guard
    LDT - head up Center
RDT - shade outside shoulder of weak guard
RDE - aligns 1 yd outside of weak offensive tackle
SS - head up weak offensive tackle 4.5 yds off the line of scrimmage

one adjustment that is made with this alignment is the MLB and the SS swap spots. That's the base alignment of the 46 defense. Now look at ESPN. Do you see this exact alignment? NO!!

Here is what is in ESPN vs I Pro without adjustments
SOLB - not even on the line of scrimmage and cannot get there unless you manually move him there. Lines up 4 to 5 yds off the line of scrimmage head up Strong Offensive Tackle
WOLB - lines up 1 to 2 yds outside of Weak OT 2 yds off the line of scrimmage
MLB - lines up inside shoulder of weak offensive tackle 4.5 yds off the line of scrimmage
LDE - shades outside shoulder of strong tackle
LDT - lines up head up strong guard
RDT - head up weak Guard
RDE - outside shoulder of weak offensive tackle
SS - head up tight end 3 to 4 yds off the line of scrimmage

Now do you see the difference. With the 46 those OLB's are always ON the line of scrimmage. Some teams make an adjustment and move one of the OLB's back inside and move the SS on the line of scrimmage. Generally the WOLB and SS are the adjusters in the 46. Thus in the end as far as I'm concerned the 46 defense isn't even in ESPN this year. But the 43 Bear is. They are both apart of the 8 man front family. I wonder why the took the 46 out though. I know one thing with the way the DE aligns in the 46 most people would never run the weak toss if they had left it in. If they did it wouldn't be with that much success. You'd have to run a weak counter or sweep at it and then you would be in business. But anyways.....

Thanks for the education LBz. After reading your post I substituted my Bear formation in ESPN to resemble what you discribed and finished it off by sliding the D-line to the weak side, linebackers to the strong side, and moving the RDE 1-2 yards outside the LOT. In my first game against the Bucs with Larry Johnson at halfback I held them to -22 yards on 14 carries.
