    -_- A mobile game? Really?

I guess it's better than nothing.

Backbreaker began as a mobile game before coming to consoles. So you never know what might happen if the Joe Montana mobile game succeeds. But I still wouldn't bet on a platform change, or on any non-Madden, simulation style football game appearing on the PS4 or Xbox One, for the duration of the NFL's exclusivity deal.

Take-Two, Activision, Ubisoft, Nintendo, Sony, and Microsoft are the only console publishers right now that have the kind of cash to compete with Madden on consoles.

And even if one of those companies came out with an unlicensed game that was better than Madden (which is not as easy to do as it sounds, since at this point, all those companies' football assets are outdated, meaning they would have to build a game from scratch), those games would still get crushed by EA's marketing and by most consumers' blind loyalty to the NFL brand.

To get to the point where an unlicensed football series could become competitive with Madden in sales, it would take multiple highly-rated, publicly-praised installments, by which point the franchise would have lost so much money, that whatever profits they were now making would still come out as an overall loss.

I thought backbreaker started as a console game and when people didnt play the game itself so much, they made the takle alley mini game on the mobile devices. could be wrong tho...

Natural Motion started out with an iOS game in 2009, which was just the Tackle Alley minigame. Then the full Backbreaker game came out on Xbox 360/PS3 in 2010.

Backbreaker Vengeance (2011) was their last console release. After that one failed to sell, they went back to being a mobile-only developer, where they have since had a ton of financial success with games like My Horse and CSR Racing.

I'm not going to set my expectations too high but I don't think it's unreasonable to think that someday a mobile game could surpass consoles. Mobile games are caching up to their console counter parts much quicker than I ever would have expected.

To be clear, I am not expecting a Madden rival right out of the gate, (and this might not be the game) but I would not be surprised to see it someday. Hooking tablets to TVs for gaming will slowly become more the norm. Add a good controller and . . . it's all there.

The processing power in tablets now compared to even a few years ago is night and day.

The main issue that they will have to address is the controls. If you require a controller that is going to take a while for people to get used to. (I already us a controller with my tablet but I know I am not the norm.)

I think the processing power and graphics could rival Madden very soon. Controls and physics will take more time IMHO.

Just saying, don't underestimate where mobile will be in a few years when the Xbox One and PS4 are winding down. The gap between where mobile was when the PS3 and 360 were released and where they ended up when the next gen came out is really astounding when you think about it.

No way mobile games come anywhere near console games EVER. Smart phones are designed to be all-in-one handy machines, a video game console is designed first and foremost to make video games. There's absolutely no possible way that mobile games as a whole will catch up to console gaming. As mobile games get better, console games keep innovating and pushing the envelope. Sure the gap got a tiny little bit closer between the release of 360 and PS3, but remember just how much those consoles games improved over time? PS4 and XB1 are just getting started and devs are still figuring out how to get the most out of them. Don't count on mobile games being anything more than time wasters anytime soon.

Re: Joe Montana Football 16 Looks to be a Mobile Game, Utilizing Unreal Engine 4

^^^^ OK, obviously I disagree with everything you just wrote, but I think we are thinking of two different things.

When you refer to mobile gaming you are referring to smart phone waste of time games . . . I am referring to tablets like the Nexus and Gameloft games like Modern Combat 5. For as big of a copycat company as Gameloft is, they do make pretty games. Hell, GTA San Andreas is a mobile game now.

Think of this, when the Xbox 360 was released the best you could play on your "smart phone" (if you could even call it that) would be what? Jewel Quest? I think that would have been the top of the line gaming for your phone back then. At the end of the generation we had mobile games ripping off halo.

The next gen consoles have failed to pushed the envelope so far this generation and I don't know if they have plans to do so. The PS3 and Xbox360 gave us HD and some pretty good standards for online gaming. (I though Xbox Live was more revolutionary than it really gets credit for. PS3 took a little longer but their online environment became quite stable and very good too.) The PS4 and Xbox one give us more of the same with a better graphics and a little more power. I don't see a revolution this generation, (maybe Sony VR?)

If the console life cycle remains what it was last generation, meaning new console every 8 or 9 years and new phones and tablets come out every year . . . well I think the tablets might catch them.

Just my opinion, we will see what others think.

Back on topic, I am interested to see what Unreal 4 can deliver for a sports game on a tablet. They are ready to do amazing things:

The dead Space mobile game looked amazing when it came out a few years ago. Pretty comparable to the console version just smaller in size and scale. Its amazing that you can fit a ps2 size console on your phone. Mobile devices update much more quickly than consoles and the games themselves look better each month it seems. When consoles come out whatever technology they have is what their pretty much stuck with for at least 5 years. The only thing developers can do is make better use with what they have. I'm looking forward to see what Joe Montana brings to the table.

Frankly gaming on my iPad might rival time I have spent on my X1. The graphics are not quite there but the gap is closing very fast.

Strategy/Turn based games work amazingly well on tablets. Its to the point that if it is getting released on PC and will come/looks to come to iOS at a later date, I will wait for the iOS release.

I also fly a lot so its just great to rock some games while killing time on a plane.

Look below the monitor on the left screen there is what looks to be an xbox controller. Not sure if they use controllers to test out mobile games but I doubt it with that set-up.
