I'm sorry but I just think that is crap. Excuse me if I'm wrong, but I've never seen him in trouble, on the field or off the field. Never seen him really spout off about anything until last year. So you're telling me you just saw a picture of him, even though this guy has stayed out of trouble practically his whole time in the league, and basically thought, "thug".

    I'm sorry, but that's pathetic.

ESPN the magazine had a great article on James a few years ago. His family is in my prayers.

Yeah, because Miami is known for producing quality people during their hey-day.

It's easy to see James fitting that persona based on perception, association, and appearance. Nevertheless, I said I stand corrected.

So please, continue to harp on it if it makes you feel better......

Seriously, you need to come off it. I'm certainly not for stereotyping, profiling, etc, etc. But if you go to far one way, you leave yourself open to people judging you negatively because of your appearance.

Like Dave Chappelle said, woman goes out there showing as much cleavage as possible w/a skirt barely covering her rear end, doesn't mean she's hooking. But she's wearing a hooker's "uniform".

Edge certainly has done nothing to warrant being called a thug, but I wouldn't blame anyone thinking on 1st glance that this is a guy who runs the streets.

Squint admitted to being wrong in his opening post & that should be good enough for the rest of us.

1st glance, cool. But how long has he been in the league? And just now seeing that article made you change opinion?

Maybe I am wrong, or maybe I'm different. But if you've been in the league 8 or 9 years and haven't been put out in a negative life, I'm sorry, thug isn't gonna be the 1st thing I think when I see that person.

He probably never gave 2nd thought to him. Like I guarantee you & I both never do w/95% of the league. There's a reason there is a saying, "1st impression is often the lasting impression".

We all have prejudices. Emphasis, we all have prejudices, based on what we see. Some people take it to the extreme & become racist & bigoted. But every imperfect human has got to admit they make a judgement everyday about the strangers they meet based on what their eyes tell them. If we aren't honest about that, we'll never notice those bad habits enough to root them out when they sprout up.

i agree. ...and I'll admit when I see someone with gold-plated-grill I automatically think 'what a douche'. It's not attractive, cool or anything positive imo so someone deliberately putting that in their mouth on purpose to me - they look like idiots lol...

people who look like that are projecting an image. The image is I'm hard etc...not 'I'm a caring father.'

So it's cool if he's a good dad, but I still think people putting gold in their mouths look stupid and make no appologies about it.

But it is a cool story, and I've always liked the way he plays. He looks cool too (when he doesn't have that **** in his mouth)

Re: Edgerrin James has my respect

I recall a good story on Edge around the time he was drafted as well (ESPN the magazine, as I recall). My impression of him has always been positive from that point.

That said, given the reputation of his Alma Mater, I could see where people could perceive him incorrectly. Good to see something bringing his character to light.

                              This thread has become comical.

Someone admits an error in judgement (which is human nature) and the perfect people of OS weigh in on how it's just so astonishing that anyone could ever have that kind of perception.
