Entirely fair question for Ireland to ask. NFL draft interviews and the job interviews normal folk have to go through are two entirely different things. Unlike the guy working the fryer at Burger King or mail men, NFL players get guaranteed money. If I have to give a guy millions of dollars guaranteed, I have the right to protect my investment. Dez's mother is currently in prison for selling cocaine, so it's not like Ireland was accusing a sweet church going old lady of turning tricks. This question didn't come out of left field. A lot of people blame Ben Roethlisberger's immaturity on his mother's death. TO's lack of a male role model is often pointed to as the cause of his diva streak. To ignore off the field issues is absurd, especially for a team located in the party capital of the eastern seaboard.
It says a lot about Dez's character that he went to the media and made such a small thing into the story of the week. Clearly all that talk of Dez being a diva was justified. While I don't blame Dez for the media's overexposing of this non-story, his reaction to this shows me a lack of mental toughness on his part. If Dez is freaking out when a guy who could have been his boss asks an uncomfortable question, how will he react when someone badmouths his mother in a club?
