If Mike Mayock comes out with a list or Gil Brandt then I'll take it seriously.Comment

This list is why I don't put much stock in lists created by sports writers. None of them are talent evaluators. None of them actually watch much film or even know what they are looking at. They watch these guys like fans.

Re: Top 10 Safeties, according to ESPN.com
Why do you have to go off what Mayock or Brandt say? How bout watching these players thoroughly yourself and evaluating how much of an impact they are for there defenses. Thats what I do. I've been watching these guys since they were in college and the pros.. All of them are very solid players and contribute big to there teams. None of them are mediocre.. They may not be elite like the top 4 but far from being mediocre. But like I said your entitled to your opinion even if I think its way off base.
2. Unless you are watching " all-11 films" and have a legit football background and fully understand those teams schemes and those players roles within those defenses not sure how your going to be better than trained talent evaluators with access actual film not just TV feeds and a working knowledge of how exactly those teams are deploying their players.Comment

I don't get to watch much Chargers games so I have no idea how good Weddle is but I do know Griffin is a horrible tackler lol. I don't think Landry belongs on this list at all. Hes horrendous in coverage an I would probably put Bethea at 6 right behind Berry.Comment

Re: Top 10 Safeties, according to ESPN.com
I may not be an evaluator like those guys but from playing football(secondary) and watching it all my life it really isn't that hard to figure out the good players in this league. The list they had was good just the placement of some of the players were a little off. Those guys that put together that list are talent evaluators. To say those guys are mediocre obviously shows your not too good at evaluating players in the most average way..

I think this is a very interesting debate after 1 and 2, personally I thought Berry was good last season, but I didn't think he was all of a sudden a top 5 safety just yet
Problem is the Top 2 do basically everything really well, while everyone else has at least one hole in their game. So the top 2 really stand out.
Unless you really know a lot about their role in the defense, it's really tough to judge safety play. Particularly just by watching it on TV.
I will say I think a few guys on this list are on due to rep, usually for being physical. It if you are super physical the sports writers forget the rest of your game. See Roy Williams a few years ago for examples.
I like Ryan Clark from Pittsburgh a lot. It's nice to see Adrian Wilson get some pub. Antrel Rolle obviously is a better safety than a CB, but he still looks uncomfortable in 2 deep coverage and also coming up in run support from that position. It's a lot different providing run force from safety than it is from the corner.
Whitner, not sure how he ended up on the list. Merriweather gets the Landry/Roy Williams treatment, he gets a couple of big hits in, and everyone thinks he's a player. He looked absolutely lost at times for them.
I love Eric Berry's game. I thought he was the one sure fire can't miss prospect in that draft class. Imo, he and Earl Thomas will be the next great ones.
I wonder if Taylor Mays will get coached up in SF. He's as physically gifted as any safety I have ever seen. But he's so robotic and always a step behind where he should be, dating back to his USC days. If he ever "got it" he'd potentially be as good as anyone I have ever seen. But I just don't think he's got the football instincts.Comment

Not sure why Saints fans think Jenkins is a top 5 lock however.Comment

I really liked what Jenkins did last season, he was solid in all areas of the game and with it being his first season at FS once he made a mistake he seemed to not make it again.Saints, LSU, Seminoles, Pelicans, Marlins, LightningComment
