It airs on a day when 90+% of the country is off of work and there is nothing else on television. They could show a re-run of a preseason game in that timeslot and draw double-digit millions. 30 million people watched last year when 3-7 Dallas hosted 3-7 Washington. And lest you think it's just the NFC East draw, 24 million watched the 4-6 Lions host the 3-7 Texans last year too.

It's one of the marquee timeslots in all of television and they routinely squander it on terrible matchups.

Bills, Sabres, Illini, Cubs, basically any team that abuses its fanbase and I'm there.

Cowboys are a draw, they’re good for business(moreso than 29 other teams)and it proves every time they’re on National TV so it’s not a surprise.

They can play on Thanksgiving, Christmas, Sunday, Monday or Tuesday and will still draw and pull ratings/money for the league, which is ultimately what matters for them.

Every reason you just listed is a reason not to waste a great match up on Thanksgiving. People will watch anyway.

Even with those great viewership numbers, it just means that tv was on the game it doesn’t mean people are actually paying attention to the game. We had the tv on the games all day yesterday and I’m a Bears fan so I’d have extra reason to be paying attention to the first game and I still only saw about a handful of plays from the game. Thanksgiving games are background noise, no need to waste good games on those time slots

I have to admit, I did not expect "The games are bad and I like it that way" to be the prevailing opinion

The only bad game yesterday was the only one I watched at all (Bills-Saints) because I thought I'd watch the "good one".

Since you didn't watch it, I can confirm for you that Detroit-Chicago was bad. Vegas-Dallas was good when the refs allow it to be, but that's a different discussion entirely. Agreed on Buffalo-NO, but themes the breaks. It looked great on paper like you said.

Well to be fair, this whole thing started because you said the NFL squanders it’s stranglehold on TV audiences by having Dallas and Detroit on Thanksgiving every year.

Yet for one of those teams, we know that’s not true and has never been true and has been proven every year.

That was my only issue to begin with, but it’s all good now.

                    Re: NFL Off Topic

                    Per ProFootballTalk

By agreeing to pay $790 million to settle the Rams relocation litigation, the NFL avoided a Seinfeld finale-style parade of owners onto the witness stand at a trial that was due to begin in January. The league also hopes to avoid the publication of certain documents generated during the litigation.

The settlement agreement signed by the parties on Wednesday requires the destruction of certain documents regarding the case within seven days after the eventual “stipulation of dismissal.” The dismissal is required within seven days after the payment of the $790 million settlement, which is required within 30 days after Wednesday, November 24.

To keep the materials from being destroyed, someone will need to move quickly, seeking production of the documents from the three plaintiffs — all public entities — and then filing a lawsuit along with a request for a court order blocking the destruction. Ben Frederickson of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch has made it clear that his publication intends to proceed accordingly.

Hopefully, it will. The NFL has agreed to pay hundreds of millions in order to prevent a public trial in open court. It’s possible that it’s too late to expunge the information that already was generated during the litigation process, especially since that litigation involved public bodies who can’t make things secret.

Whatever went down, it was enough to get the NFL to pay nearly $800 million. It’s only fair that everyone get a chance to explore those materials in an effort to discover what could be a very inconvenient truth about the NFL.

I think we've been talking past each other tbh. I brought up my opinion on the Thanksgiving games, leaving unstated that I thought:

                      1) The NFL should attempt to put its most exciting games in front of its largest audiences, and
                      2) NFL fans would want that to happen on Thanksgiving.

And then proposing my approach to improving the quality of those games.

I assumed, quite wrongly, that most people would agree with those two statements. As it turns out, No those are not common and the conversation went a totally different way than I expected.

For years we've all bitched about the quality of play on Thursday games because of the short week. Can't say you personally have because I don't pay that much attention but it shouldn't be a surprise that a majority of fans who already don't like Thursday games because of the short week would want to see THREE marque games on a short week when a majority of people aren't paying attention to games like they would for basically any other week of the year.

The short week is a solvable problem and the latter is what surprised me.

Its going to vary from family to family. If you have a large gathering and/or a lot of crotch goblins running around you won't be able to pay much attention.
