Well what the hell was the point of signing William Gay then? The Steelers never fail to baffle me when it comes to how they handle the cornerback position. In the last 10 years I can count on one hand the number of solid cornerbacks the Steelers have had: Ike Taylor, Deshea Townsend and Keenan Lewis. One's retired, one plays for another team and one is reaching the end of his prime and will start his decline soon. How the Steelers manage to mismanage and neglect one of the most important positions for their defensive scheme is baffling.

And to relate this back to everyone else who doesn't care about the inner workings of the Steelers secondary, what other teams consistently mismanage positions and can never seem to find consistency or develop talent at a certain position?
I think it happens often at WR. The Ravens are a good example. As great as Ozzie is with the draft, they failed at developing a WR through the draft until Torrey... and his development was helped by mentors like Mason and Boldin that were signed through FA. I think the nature of the position calls for a freak of nature in the draft or some really talented coaching or players ahead of you.

I guess I can see how defensive back could be similar (while not the same) but deficiencies there can also be masked by a great pass rush, hiding it for some teams.

The Saints haven't been able to either sign or develop a good group of linebackers for as long as I can remember. I think the Dome Patrol was probably the last time the Saints had great linebackers.

If I went any bigger, it would not have properly fit with my equipment, so I had to optimize. I'm okay with it, but I also know what I'm missing with those five inches. :)

The Bears have had a revolving door of orange cones playing safety since Mike Brown left.

He returned an INT for a TD in overtime in two straight games in 2001.

              Don't feel bad SteelersFreak.

The Packers haven't been able to develop a running back in quite some time.

Brandon Jackson was crap, James Starks had his moment in the sun in the playoff run but has sucked since injuries, Alex Green hasn't ever done much and the list goes on.

Hopefully Lacy / Franklin change that, but I'm not holding my breath.

Mike Brown was ridiculous, it was just too bad that he could never stay healthy, just like Bob Sanders.

Add in the fact that that the defensive line and linebackers can't get constant pressure, so the secondary is an even bigger focal point.

Yeah, I wouldn't feel bad either SteelersFreak, the Lions haven't been able to develop a decent team for more than a few games each year.

If there was a Bears team that I didn't hate, it was this 2001 team. Mike Brown, Young Urlacher, David Terrell and Anthony Thomas...loved watching those guys play that year except when they played the Pack.

He was with Seattle for 2 years behind Ricky Watters doing pretty well - he just got no touches because Watters was there.

I wouldn't say GB really developed him at all.

Ryan Grant would be the closest we have since... well... forever, but even then he's only produced for 3 years (07 - 956 yds, 08 - 1203, 09- 1253).

Also, on the Mike Brown topic - I remember that year amazingly well for him. I played fantasy that year with defensive players included, instead of team defense, and Brown won multiple games for me.

2001, my second year of college. That Browns game...the Bears scored 2 TDs in the final minute of the 4th, including a hail mary as time expired to send it to OT. When Brown caught that deflection, me and the other Bears fan in my on-campus apartment building were running up and down the hall laughing and cheering.
