I don't know how I would feel about 19 year old kids playing with grown men. I remember the 19 year old DT the bears drafted, and he has basically been a ghost in the NFL.

Yeah, it was obviously bad scouting on their part, but you see that with 22-23 year olds, too. So I don't think it's necessarily an age thing

Personally I'm in favor of the 3 year rule. Do we really want college football to turn into the sham that college basketball has been for the last 15-20 years?

I'd personally be in favor of a 4-year rule.. or a graduate rule.

There are way fewer football players that are NFL ready at 18-20 than there are basketball players that are NBA ready at the same age. I really don't think it would become a widespread issue, but it's impossible to know for sure.

I'm assuming you mean Amobi Okoye? He was drafted by the Texans, not the Bears.

I was like this for a while, but as I got older Im meh about it. If you can make money being a professional athlete your degree is pretty pointless. You can always go to school after, or finish during your offseason. But 4 years AND a must graduate mandate to play a sport? Not much sense to me.

Exactly. Too much uncertainty when you're spending a first rounder on an 18-19 year old who has one year under his belt. Most teams don't have the 3-4 years before that player can be a regular contributor.

STUDENT-athlete. How many players actually get their degree when turning pro? How many guys spend all their money and end up broke w/ no degree to lean on?

How many guys do go to school during the offseason to finish up schooling and nobody reports on it because they'd rather talk about Tebow deserving a to start somewhere, or the Super Bowl Halftime show or what team is LeBron James going to play for next and so on.

Go check graduation rates of D1 teams and the player's "majors". Feel free to look for those other players that went back and got their degree. Then compare that percentage to those that didn't.

                          I'll wait.

Getting a degree does not equate to making the right decisions when you are in the league.

Some guys arent interested in getting a degree in sports science, or some other technicality driven degree to play football. Student athlete is term that has outstayed its welcome in major college sports imo.

What's the graduation/dropout rate for college in general though? Isn't it about 50% of freshmen drop out after 1 year?

EDIT: 46% of those who enter a U.S. college fail to graduate within six years.

So is the graduation rate for sports drastically lower than the grad rate for college in general?
