Our defense was starting to play very well before they got decimated by injuries though, and it wouldn't cost much to trade up. We could still get a solid corner or linebacker in the 2nd or 3rd round (I assume we'd only have to give up 1 of those to move up 2 spots).

Obviously the preferred would be that Minnesota takes Kalil, and then we get Claiborne at 5, and get Doug Martin or James or some other RB in the 2nd round, but that doesn't seem to really be an option anymore based on what the Vikings have been saying (yes, they could be bluffing).

If we end up with Richardson, I won't complain at all.

But there are possibly 3 good RB's we could get in the top of the 2nd. We still need depth and this is probably a new defensive system. I'd rather just trade out.

I think Doug Martin will be a solid pick for whoever gets him. Not hearing much talk about him.

I'm still wondering how well that combination works if both could stay healthy for an entire year... that hasn't happened yet.

I feel like Blount can do more than he was allowed to. Maybe they just don't like him and they get Richardson and shop him. I'm not sure I like them together, because both are pretty young and Richardson is the better blocking back already so the breakdown of playing time would be interesting if they're both healthy all year.

Biggest thing though is the same question I have about the Ravens taking a WR in round 1. There are bigger needs, so why not address them? To be fair, I felt the same way about Minnesota taking AP right after signing Chester Taylor. I'll take Blount over Taylor every day of the week, but AP certainly proved he was worth the pick (even if it was 7 rather than 3 or 4).

This is exactly where I'm at. When Blount was used correctly, he was effective. Signing Nicks and VJax will help the running game already. We don't need a top five running back. Not when there's still questions at linebacker, and the secondary. In a division w/ Brees, Ryan, and Newton I'd like a little more help on the defensive side of the ball.

If you have access to a computer you might as well go on twitter and follow Colin Cowherd who's gonna be tweeting about it all night.

I don't know about "listen" but there have to be a few apps you can download to follow it. If you're with Verizon you should be able to watch the NFL Network for free on your phone. If not, you may want to see about hooking up Watch ESPN... not sure what they'll have in terms of draft coverage, but what's the point of the app if you can't watch live video of the biggest sporting event of the night?

You could try ESPN radio. I'm sure the coverage will be thick.

Blount's a great runner, but he's abysmal as a blocker so when he's on the field, defenses basically know it's a running play, and if he's not on the field, they know it's a passing play. I think he would be very good in a Jonathan Stewart kinda role, and at the end of the day, Richardson appears to be a top 10 running back in the NFL already. I think Doug Martin could be good, but I'm skeptical about LaMichael James.

Also, Greg Schiano wants a running back that protects the ball. Blount had some fumble issues last year and he has terrible hands when he comes out of the backfield as well.

Again, I'd prefer to stay at 5 and get Morris Claiborne or Richardson there, but if it appears that we're going to miss out on both, I'd rather trade up and get one of them than stay put and reach on Kuechly or something.

I do not want Michael Brockers out of LSU -- although that's who we've been linked to in recent mocks.
Why would you not want Michael Brockers if you want a DT? He has everything you want in a good DT imo, was the best among a star studded LSU D-line, has good measurables/techniques and John Chevis called him one of the best guys he's coached in college.

Blount may be a horrible blocker but teams knew you were running when he was in the game because that's the only time the coaches put him in the game. In other words, even with Richardson, if Blount only goes in on running plays that won't change the predictability of it. It's not abnormal for a back to struggle at blocking early in their career. If Blount really wasn't getting ANY better (they really could've put him out there on more passing plays) then the Richardson talk is probably so they can get rid of Blount. If that's the case, then it makes sense.

I don't think the Panthers set up is a good comparison though because both of those backs could take the load on any team. I'm still not sure that combo is really working because one or both have been hurt so much. Most combo backfields have RBs with different skills (like the Chargers or Saints). But those are cases were either the backs didn't come at a high price or, with the Saints, the rest of the team was in a good place where they could spend a high pick on a RB even though they had good options already.

Again, I don't think it'd be horrible. I just don't think it's the best move... and I felt the same way about Minnesota a few years ago and was dead wrong about that one.
