Because then the public is more in-tune with the subject? Isn't that like a basic principle? I mean its not like the info isn't already out there, but your average joe schmo wont go looking for it. He'll see Junior Seaus death on ESPN, then he'll learn about the possible causes. At least I thought that was basic, maybe not.Support Local Sports

Re: R.I.P. Junior Seau 1969-2012
Your average joe schmo tunes into ESPN for sports news though, not scientific breakdown of concussions and depression. In comparison, I don't come to OS looking for political or market news; if I wanted that I would seek out other media sources. It would also be disappointing if OS forced that upon me despite me not looking for it, especially if the topic is consistently in the news and unless you've been living under a rock are already informed of it.Last edited by Benz87; 05-02-2012, 07:19 PM.Green Bay Packers | Milwaukee Bucks | Milwaukee BrewersComment

I grew up in San Diego, and that man was idolized in that community. As a man, more than the player. The only figure in San Diego that has ever come close is Tony Gwynn. It's really too bad. He was always one of my favorite players, and it's hard to believe he's gone.Comment

R.I.P. Junior. You're an immortal Trojan and will be missed by all who love the game.
Reading through this thread has been interesting. If one can find comfort in knowing that others have been down dark roads, I find comfort in hearing that many fellow OSers have wrestled with depression. I've been diagnosed with chronic depression and just have to deal with it. The thing is, it's your own private hell and everyone's is different.
What really makes stuff like this hard to hear is that 1) we live in a culture where mental illness is still stigmatized, and 2) the NFL doesn't appear to provide its players with appropriate medical care, including counseling, after they retire from the game. To my mind, anyone who has been diagnosed with concussions or other major injuries should have access to medical support after retirement at a rate that won't send them to the streets.
If I had enough money to start a charity fund, it'd be for providing counseling for NFL vets so that if they ever felt so alone and in such a dark place, they could have somewhere to go and someone to talk to.
It's a shame that death is what spurs these conversations onward. Seau was such a legendary figure. I hope in the media blitz on CTE that we also get to remember his vibrant life on and off the field.
Thanks for the memories, 55.Comment
