            Re: R.I.P. Junior Seau 1969-2012

I am going to step up on my soap box and I apologize to anyone in advance if this bothers you or if you feel this thread is not the proper place...

            But:

My sons are NOT playing football. It's a game I love and take a lot of enjoyment in. But it's simply NOT worth it. The guy shoots himself in the chest to save his brain, if that's what really occurred, because he wants the education to increase about this game... That to me speaks volumes. Junior Seau obviously loved football a great deal; anyone could see that with the passion he displayed while on the field. He felt so strongly about getting the message out that he put one in his chest so his brain was left intact so science could get a hold of it to look at the damage football did...

            Wow. That's unreal.

There's a high school near me that had 39 kids on their varsity football team. An article in a local paper reported that out of the 39 kids, 23 kids suffered concussions during the 2011 season. 13 of those kids suffered more than one concussion over the course of the season. Two kids were air lifted off of the field due to their concussions.

I have a cousin in Tennessee. He is in ninth grade. His teammate took a hit over the middle and died. Literally died on the field. Massive brain trauma and swelling was the cause of his death. 14-years-old.

My sons are NOT playing football. I started a thread about this here in the OS Neighborhood not too long ago.

I don't care if people think that's over protective. I am not going to allow my sons to play such a violent game - a game that I love, but a game that is simply not worth it and maybe that is the message that Junior Seau was trying to send. I could be wrong, but connect the damn dots.

I hope the NFL keeps taking measures to protect their players. People will complain and say the game is getting too soft, that players should know the risks, etc... To that I say, what if it were your kid? Or in Seau's case, your dad? You wouldn't be singing the same tune, I promise you that.

Junior, RIP, good sir. I am sorry that it ended up this way.

            /off soap box...

                Re: R.I.P. Junior Seau 1969-2012

Seau was one of the greatest players I've ever seen. He played for about 20 seasons and there's no doubt that had to play a role in this tragic event. I would be very surprised if nothing shows up when his brain is tested. RIP Junior.

When I heard this yesterday I drove to my parents house and gave them both a hug. My mom saw Junior's mom and was heartbroken. She said unless you're a mom you just can't understand the love they have for their child.

My heart goes out to his family but mostly to his children.

I don't understand how it is "apparent suicide" with a gunshot wound to the chest? While he didn't leave a note, was Seau trying something similar to Dave Duerson by perserving the brain for doctors to examine for football related trauma?

It's probably apparent cuz there isn't any evidence someone shot him but they don't want to jump to conclusions saying it was a suicide.

They still have to do an investigation.

I couldn't find your original thread, so I'll just post it here...

While I respect your opinion, and of course it's any parent's right to tell their kids what they do and don't want them to do, I'd still let my son play if he really felt strongly about playing. However, I would let him know about the health risks involved long term with it and the possibility of serious injury involved. I know we're getting more into a parenting issue here than football, so I'll just leave it at that.

I think we should wait to pass judgement on whether or not this draws comparisons to Dave Duerson's tragedy once we know more. Duerson left, from what I understand, a detailed letter that outlined his plans. No such thing has been found on Seau's behalf, at least I have not heard of that yet.

                                Re: R.I.P. Junior Seau 1969-2012

Junior Seau - Growing up watching football in the 90s that name is just synonymous with football to me, much like Joe Montana, Jerry Rice, John Elway, etc.

Yesterday was a sad day for all football fans, but I'll reserve judgement on how the effects my feelings on football until I hear more. Because honestly we don't know what caused him to make the decision that he made yesterday. Was he suffering from brain damage caused from hits to the head or from depression from missing football (being out of the spotlight, missing interaction with teammates, etc) or could it have just been something going on in his personal life (relationship, money, etc.)? We don't know. I know he shot himself in the chest and most assume it was because he wanted to mimic what Dureson did. However, maybe he just wanted to protect his face for the funeral. That assumption is just as reasonable, in my opinion.

The truth is none of us truly know for sure and all of this is just speculation. The only thing that I do know is that the man left behind a family and I truly feel for them.
