That's why I didn't try to get them to lower my price this year (I did the last two consecutive years). Beside, they lowered it across the board this year to $199, which is way worth it IMO.

I don't know, but I've done this for EVERY sports package. I have the NBA, NHL, NFL and MLB packages and I've NEVER paid full price for any of them. Yeah, they may note the calls, but I do this for each sports package they provide. I've never had to re-call them - I just take what they offer. They always tell me they value me as a customer in good standing, so it always works on my behalf. Again, I'm very polite... The CSR's have credits available, and they WANT to work with you. They will also try to see what they can do with providing you discounts on other things to bring the costs down. It doesn't make sense to pay full price for something that they're willing to work with you and take 20 to 50% off the cost. I feel if they give me ANYTHING off that I've saved money, and if I don't like it I'll just tell them no thanks and no harm done.

I agree with your thought process, but the bolded part at the end isn't true. If you say "no thanks", basically meaning they've called your bluff, then you're without Sunday Ticket unless I'm missing something.

No, I would end up paying full price. In 5 years it has NEVER happened. But even if it did: with everything I've saved over the last 5 years for each of the sports packages, am I really "losing" money? Shoot no...I've already saved so much that basically DirecTv is GIVING me one of these packages for free. I look at the big picture, not the small one. I'm winning each time I make a phone call...

To be clear, you're describing a call where you're threatening to cancel your Sunday Ticket with the hopes of them giving you a deal to get you to keep it. If they refuse to give you a deal you'd just say, "Nevermind, I'll go ahead and keep Sunday Ticket." Not a good look.

Don't get me wrong, your success rate makes the effort worth it, and many people here have been doing the same thing with similar success. But you're basically bluffing so the "worse case scenario" is getting serious egg on your face (and probably a black mark on your account) bc you (at least most of us) would be willing to pay full price despite the empty threat.

No you never say you want to cancel. You just say cancel to get to the reps who can give you better deals. Then when you get to the rep, you tell them that you want to know if there is anything they can do to lower your bill, etc.

Re: 2012 NFL Sunday Ticket Discussion Thread

You say "cancel" to the automated system - and you have to say it twice. You're not talking to a "real" person at this point, just their automated system. You do this to get you to the proper people with the best skills to help you - the top CSR's. It's THEN that you now find yourself speaking with a real person. They start asking questions, and you then state you are interested in the NFL package and then allow the conversation to go from there.

As stated above, I don't tell the real-life person I want to cancel, just that I acknowledge the costs involved and ask if they have any deals in place. They typically start by saying, no, they don't. It's THEN that you begin the process of negotiations. This year I will be getting a HUGE discount simply because I asked, I was polite, I am a customer of many years, and one who always pays my bill one time, along with the fact I've purchased numerous sports packages in the past.

Look, they're giving this package away to NEW people signing up for DirecTv AND for those who are moving to a new home and taking their DirecTv with them. I figure, what the heck - why can't I get that same kind of appreciation??

And it has ALWAYS worked... I'm not levying empty threats. I think the misunderstanding occurs in my saying "cancel" - but I'm only saying this to the automated message system that is taking me to the real person that I want to speak with. That simply cuts corners for me, and we all know they don't want anyone to cancel their service.

Remember: be polite, and you, the customer, are valued. I don't pay top dollar for cars I purchase or anything. You have to be bold, but friendly. And you have to be willing to walk away from the discussion if things don't work to your liking.

Being polite certainly helps but when you say cancel, they are transferring you to the retention department.

...and that is exactly the place I want to be.

There is a website I frequent - DBS Talk is what it's called (I won't share the link - you can google it). It's THE best site for this stuff. This is the procedure that's been repeatedly shared there for how to do this. I'm only trying to help, and I'm sharing my success of saving money, yet I sense you guys think I'm doing something wrong. I'm not - if you want to pay full price, then be my guest. But I've NEVER had any of those many folks I've spoken with on the phone ever tell me to stop calling them or quit using this procedure. It's the exact opposite. My experience with DirecTv is outstanding. I'm the consumer - I want to save money. DirecTv wants me as a continued customer. It's a win-win for both of us. If you guys think I'm an a-hole for doing this, so be it. But this is my last post. If you want to save money, follow this procedure. If you want to pay full price, then you have the privilege as well.

You're reading me wrong. Many people around here have done this, and I think it's a good idea. I was just nitpicking the thought that there is absolutely no risk. I think more accurately there's a 2% risk or something like that, but that's certainly still worth it. Sorry to confuse what I meant.

I have been patiently waiting for someone to post the news that Sunday Ticket will be on the PS3 this year for around $150.00-$199.00. It's starting to look like thats not going to happen.....

I emailed Direct Tv out of curiosity today and this is the response I got back:

"Thank you for writing about your interest with the NFL SUNDAY TICKET.

We find ways to provide the ultimate football experience. The NFL SUNDAY TICKET for Non-DIRECTV customer Regular Season offer is $299.95 and are available for purchase starting Sep 4, 2012 through the subscriber's PS3 at the PlayStation Network Store.

For support, orders, billing and others, you can call (800) 345-7669 since you cannot get DIRECTV at your current address. Also, please visit www.us.playstation.com/support"

Even for $299.99 I still think its a steal. I went to a Patriots game last year with my brother in law after tickets, parking, beer/food we paid close to $400 each and the seats weren't the greatest. To be able to watch all 16 Patriots games (I dont live in New England) for less than the price of a trip to one game, sign me up!!

$299.99 is a little to rich for my blood. PFT reported they were going to drop the price, with some of the issues reported from last season I would imagine they would make the price a little more competitive.

Yeah for $300 i'm out, I can justify $150 probably even $200 but that's a little too much.
