Re: 2014 NFL Draft Discussion Thread
I don't think he was referring to Manziel not being a leader because of him not "yelling or give rah rah speeches". He's probably referring to Manziel not being a leader due to possible maturity issues while at A&M. Not saying I agree with him but just clearing up that guys post for you. Anyone that watches college football knows that his leadership was constantly questioned by the media due to his antics off the field. Not because he wasn't a "rah rah" guy. Once again, not saying I agree with any of this but just clearing it up for you.Comment

He isn't the CB you're looking for...
I wish Gilbert would fall to the Steelers, but I can't see that happening after his Combine.Comment

Re: 2014 NFL Draft Discussion Thread
I'll post my opinions as a Texans fan.
Clowney: I don't know if he's a fit for the Texans defense. His best fit in a 3-4 would be as a DE opposite Watt. He's not flexible enough to handle dropping into coverage or bending the edge against OT's coming from the 7 or 9-tech. And since Clowney came in at less than his listed playing weight, I'm thinking he wants to be that big money pass-rushing OLB if taken by the Texans, not a 5-tech DE where he'd best fit in a 3-4 IMO. Not to say he wouldn't be effective. I'm sure he'd produce just based on his physical talent but not necessarily at the level of the generational talent he's hyped to be.
Manziel: Yeah, no. Simplest way I would explain my feelings is thus: Johnny Football will not succeed in the NFL, however Johnny Manziel could become a good NFL QB. By that I mean I don't see his improvisational style working in the NFL. Running around for 10 seconds and then chucking it to Evans is exciting and makes a great highlight play. But if he tries that in the NFL it's either an interception or he gets decapitated by Robert Mathis. But if he can learn patience in the pocket (big if), and how to go through progressions he could be a solid NFL QB. I'm surprised it took until today with Mortenson for someone to say these things about Manziel. And I value him about the same as Mortenson for the same reasons: 3rd round as a project.
Bortles: He needs a lot of work. I didn't get to see him throw at the combine (yay weekend shifts) but from his film I've watched his mechanics are rough, his accuracy is inconsistent, his arm isn't as big as some claim, and it doesn't look like he reads more than half the defense. That said he has less to work on than Manziel. IF OB thinks the mechanical and accuracy issues can be fixed fairly easy and that he can go through the progressions quick enough I'd be fine with taking Bortles. Not at 1.1 though.
Mack: If Houston wants a pass rusher at OLB with their first pick, Mack is my guy, not Clowney. I have no doubts about Mack being able to handle OLB in a 3-4, he has a relentless motor, and plays the run well. He did play against weaker competition, but he just seemed so far ahead of everyone else on the field in terms of diagnosing the play I wouldn't be too concerned. Might be an adjustment period but I think he'll be just fine in the NFL. Though like Bortles, I wouldn't take him at 1.1
Bridgewater: I don't care that he didn't run the 40. I don't care that he didn't throw (though it would have been nice to see). I still think he's smarter and better at reading defense than anyone else in the draft. Only legitimate criticism of him IMO is his inconsistent deep ball accuracy, which is fixable. Still my #1 choice for pick 1.1.
TL/DR:
My order of preference:
1. Bridgewater
2. Clowney as DE
3a. Bortles after trade down
3b. Mack After Trade down
4. Clowney as OLB
Edit: Jaworski, not Mortensen. I confuse my BSPN talking heads.Last edited by Melanconfan; 02-26-2014, 07:49 PM.Comment

I sure hope Donald falls to Dallas...But that would result in Jerry Jones actually making a good pick.PSN-Shugarooo

Re: 2014 NFL Draft Discussion Thread
I hope that the Vikings pass on a QB unless Bortles or Bridgewater are still on the board in the first round. The QB class is deep this year, Carr, McCarron, and Mettenberger should be available in the 2nd round. The Vikings need a stud at MLB. Zimmerman being a defensive guy could go this direction.Comment

I mean of course you don't 100% have to fit a certain mold to be a leader as they come in different compositions. However, at the core they have key elements of similarity. I don't think anybody is going to make the argument that you have to get in people's faces to be considered a leader.SOS Madden League (PS4) | League Archives

Don't know how I feel about CJ Mosley though.
The only QB who Imo has the highest floor is Bridgewater. That's the only QB I want the Vikings to get if they Draft one first round. If he is gone then you can still pick someone up in the second or third round.

Khalil Mack or Anthony Barr would be great.

Re: 2014 NFL Draft Discussion Thread
Im pretty certain I have no idea what the Giants are gonna do. This is a team that has holes everywhere, but never drafts for need. We may draft Jabari Parker for all I know.
Im just ready for The Trainwreck Part 2 this season.Comment

After Michael Sam's workout numbers at the combine I could see him going undrafted. Man will that creat a media storm from the non-football folks. I hope he improves his numbers at his pro day so he gets selected. I wanna see him get a shot.NCAA: Michigan Wolverines

Re: 2014 NFL Draft Discussion Thread
Jordan Gross retiring opens up another hole for Carolina. They really need 2 new starting T's now as the RT position was weak last season.
I've seen mocks have Carolina taking a WR/CB/S so far, and I'd be happy with any of those. It seems like there will still be some quality OL guys in the 2nd round for the Panthers to pick up.Comment

With him retiring, doesn't that give them more cap room?

Re: 2014 NFL Draft Discussion Thread
After seeing the pedestrian numbers he put up at the combine I think he could still get drafted but more likely he'll be a camp invite guy.I've heard this "patience is a virtue" junk all my life. I'm happy to say I have no virtue, no scruples, and no desire to wait too long for anything. In my humble opinion instant gratification takes too long!
