Re: Babin trying out linebacker
I can tell you that is indeed true since I buy the Houston Chronicle on a daily basis( I live there) Babin and Antwan Peek are to battle Charlie Clemons for the spot, but since they gave up 3 picks to draft Babin I would bet the job goes to Babin. Dom Capers says he wants Babin to play off the line on run downs then on the line to rush the passer, just like he used Kevin Greene when he coached the Carolina Panthers.... -

Re: Babin trying out linebacker
That is the reason they drafted him, with the intent to convert him from DE to Outside Linebacker in the 3-4 defense the Texans run. Originally it was thought that he would play right OLB, but Vangio and Capers have decided to move Babin to left OLB with Kailee Wong switching sides. Babin is larger than Wong, so that seems to be the reason for the switch.
</font><blockquote><font class="small">Quote:</font><hr />
The initial plan is to play Babin at left outside linebacker and move veteran Kailee Wong to the right side. Wong has started at left outside linebacker in each of the Texans' first 32 games, but the right side has been somewhat unsettled, with five different players -- Jeff Posey, Keith Mitchell, Charlie Clemons, Antwan Peek and Steve Foley -- getting starts over the two years.
Wong has not played on the right side, but the addition of Babin could change that. Many teams position their outside linebackers based on the strong and weak sides, but the Texans always have kept their outside linebackers in their normal positions regardless of the strong side of the opposing offense's formation.
Because most offenses are predominately righthanded, the left outside linebacker usually finds himself facing the loaded side of the formation, which obviously makes it more difficult to defend the run and get to the quarterback. At 6-2 and 265 pounds, Babin is at least 15 pounds bigger than Wong and seemingly better equipped to take on bigger offensive players such as tight ends and tackles.

Re: Babin trying out linebacker
I've been telling everyone for 3 months or more. Jason Babin is the real deal and will be solid at the next level. People want to use MAC experience as a negative thing, but a player is a player.
Babin's skills should translate well to the outside of a 3-4.Listen to The Remodeling Clay Podcast!

Re: Babin trying out linebacker
And let us recall that during the OS mock draft, people were questioning the "league office's" decision to draft Babin to the Titans at #27 overall. That's exactly where he went in the real draft, only to the Texans. I can't wait till football season to see Jason in action!Comment
