Mallet looked great when he didn't have any pressure on him, but once there was anyone near him he was all over the place. That doesn't bode well for him in the NFL in my opinion. I really hope the Panthers can find someone to take the #1 pick and they can move down somewhere around 7-14 and get a receiver (Julio or Blackmon most likely at that point). Unfortunately, I don't see that happening and I see the Panthers taking Bowers

It looks like Ron Rivera is the lead candidate to be the next HC.. he's getting a 2nd interview (I haven't heard any other names yet). Another defensive minded head coach.. not the worst thing, I just hope he brings in a competent OC to run the offense

I agree, but anybody has to be an improvement over Jeff Davidson as OC! Davidson made me miss Dan Hennig and I didn't think that was possible.

Also if Carolina does keep the No. 1 pick, I think it's gotta be the DT Fairley from Auburn. He was pretty impressive in the BCS Championship game. Now Oregon's OL wasn't anything special, but as of now I think he's the pick if CAR keeps it.

This x1000. I'm happy with our DE's. Fairley was so disruptive every time he was on the field.

Rivera runs a 3-4 though doesn't he? Fairley will have to get a bit bigger to be the NT in a 3-4. I don't know if he'll be as effective at 320-330 as he is currently at 305. Last year he was around 320 and didn't do much. Once he lost the weight he became the disruptive force that he was this year

I don't see Fairley justifying the #1 selection. Carolina should deeply consider trading down...sad that Luck didn't jump ship though. I bet 49er land would've loved to grab him.

RE: Fairley, I wonder if he could move to DE in 3-4 situations. Moot point ofcourse, since Rivera said CAR will run a 4-3.

                      Re: Official Carolina Panthers thread

Yeah it's crazy. I didn't see Newton anywhere near the top overall pick back in January. It's all but a lock that Carolina is taking Newton now. He will be a big merchandise seller IMO, like Tim Tebow, but I hope he has a LOT more upside as a quarterback in the NFL.

So from a PR standpoint, you almost have to take him, because he puts some spotlight back on your franchise and has risen up the draft boards steadily since the BCS title game. It's not 100% clear that Gabbert is better than Newton at this point either, and with only 1 pick before the 3rd round, it has to be an impact pick and we need a franchise QB. Ofcourse we could always screw up everyone's board and grab Dareus.

At any rate, I think Newton has about a 50/50 chance of being JaMarcus Russell v2 or Mick Vick ATL lite.

Looks like there is no chance of trading out of the pick because there isn't a consensus #1 player this year.

Honestly I think there is a ZERO percent chance of him being JaMarcus Russell. Russell didn't care and was just looking for a pay day. Cam actually seems to want to be the best, the question is if he realizes how far he has to go and if he's willing to work that hard for it. He could be ATL Vick 2.0 which wouldn't be horrible on the field. He could be VY 2.0 too... both cases, the issue would be with longevity more than anything so initially it won't be the worse thing in the world. He's a HUGE gamble that high, but I don't think his floor is as low as Russell or say Ryan Leaf. More like VY or Jeff George.

That sounds like a pretty logical assessment. I won't lie, I was dead set against him going to Carolina. But, I was happy just now when they made the pick. At this point, you had to make that pick. Too much to lose, if he goes somewhere else and becomes great.

I don't like that argument for taking Newton. I think it's more likely that he turns out to be an average QB over becoming worthy of the #1 overall pick (that's more a judgment of the vast majority of college QBs in the draft and not specifically Newton). I think with the first pick, you have to take someone that you are 90% certain will be an above average NFL player and Cam Newton doesn't fit that bill to me. Cam won't be able to run the ball 15 times per game and his receivers won't be wide open like they were in college. I can see that Panthers having the #1 pick again next year, but not taking Luck because you can't justify taking 3 QBs in the top 2 rounds three straight years, much less 2 in the first round in back-to-back years.

Adding to my misery from today.. my 2 favorite Bama players are now on division rivals too
