Re: Official Denver Broncos Thread
ENGLEWOOD, Colo. -- Early into Wednesday night's practice at Dove Valley, Broncos rookies received their first public "Welcome to the NFL" moment -- courtesy of a makeshift Slip 'n Slide.
Following stretches, Head Coach Josh McDaniels gathered the team over to the south end of the field, where turf crew members had been watering down a stretch of field, making a nice muddy landing place for rookies to fall on fumbles. McDaniels then asked the first-year players to form a single-file line, and each proceeded to take his turn diving through the watery mess.
Veterans made sure the area stayed wet and muddy, aiming a hose at the rookies and often pouring extra buckets of water on them as they dove on the ball.

Re: Official Denver Broncos Thread
With just a little room to run during red zone drills, Denver Broncos wide receiver Eddie Royal bolted past one defender and used a nifty move to slip by another. An instant later, he was in the clear in the end zone where quarterback Kyle Orton hit him with a 10-yard dart.
That scene from Wednesday has become a familiar one during the Broncos training camp, where the second-year wide receiver is being groomed as an offensive centerpiece after a breakout rookie campaign a year ago.
"He sticks out every day," Denver coach Josh McDaniels said. "Eddie is a very talented player, a lot of ability, very smart, versatile. We move him all over the field. He's very unselfish, wants to do what's best for the team. He's accepted his role and he's doing a great job with it so far."
The 5-foot-10, 180-pound Royal provided a vivid demonstration of his capabilities last season. He set team rookie records for with 91 receptions, 980 yards receiving, and five touchdown catches. He also became the first player since the 1970 NFL merger to post his team's longest run (71 yards), reception (93 yards), kickoff return (95 yards), and punt return (36 yards) in the same season.
Royal finished with four games in which he had nine or more receptions, including a club rookie record 11 catches in a season-ending loss to the San Diego Chargers.
For his part, Royal is less impressed by those numbers than the opportunity to build on them, by improving his play as an individual and contributing to any overall improvement as an offense.
"I'm just coming out here and trying to get better every day," said Royal, who broke into the league as a second-round pick out of Virginia Tech. "It's not about individual stats at all. It's about winning. We want to win and we want to get to the playoffs."
The Broncos haven't done that for three consecutive seasons. The drought fueled a tumultuous offseason that included the firing of two-time Super Bowl winning coach Mike Shanahan and the trading away of Pro Bowl quarterback Jay Cutler after he clashed with McDaniels, the former New England offensive coordinator brought in to replace Shanahan.
While the new Broncos coach hasn't been shy about making personnel changes on both sides of the ball, Royal is one holdover whom McDaniels has wholeheartedly embraced.
Oh and what a tool
ENGLEWOOD, Colo. -- New Denver Broncos quarterback Kyle Orton isn't going to make this a long-distance dissing match between him and Pro Bowl passer Jay Cutler in Chicago.
Orton, who swapped places with Cutler in the biggest trade of the NFL this spring, declined to join the fray Thursday when asked about Cutler's comments that Chicago was a better football town.
Orton said both cities were great.
A day earlier, Cutler told ESPN Radio in Chicago that there's a big difference between the Mile High City and the Windy City.
He said that "Denver's on like a 6 and Chicago's on like a 9."Last edited by av7; 08-06-2009, 04:30 PM.Aaron

Re: Official Denver Broncos Thread
So according to Bill Williamson, Orton got booed tonight at Invesco after his shaky performance. I'm guessing it was the "we want Cutler" crowd.
And in case you guys hadn't hurt, Brian Dawkins broke his hand and will be out a couple weeks.
Geez, after reading a different story it sounds like the boo birds were out in full force. Kern and Prater both also got booed.Comment

Re: Official Denver Broncos Thread
The Denver Broncos' top draft pick ended an eight-day holdout by agreeing to a five-year, $23 million contract Friday, a league source told NFL Network's Jason La Canfora. Moreno received $13 million in guaranteed money in the deal, according to The Associated Press.
Moreno, who rushed for 2,734 yards and 30 touchdowns during his two seasons at the University of Georgia, was the 12th overall pick and the first running back selected in the NFL draft in April.
Moreno will join the Broncos for his first practice Sunday afternoon. The team is off Saturday.
When he does make his delayed debut, Moreno shouldn't have to worry about catching any grief for missing 12 training-camp practices and a structured scrimmage at Invesco Field. First-year Broncos coach Josh McDaniels said he holds no grudges, and Moreno's teammates were excited for him to arrive and add some pop to an offense that has lost some of its razzle and dazzle since Pro Bowl quarterback Jay Cutler was traded to the Chicago Bears and wide receiver Brandon Marshall (leg) went down with an injury early in training camp.
"I understand how this game works," McDaniels said Friday while the sides hashed out the final details of Moreno's contract. "His representatives are doing what they feel is best for him ... and we're both trying to do what's best for Knowshon and get him here as fast as we can."
While Moreno has some catching up to do, McDaniels insisted the rookie hasn't missed his chance to win the starting tailback job.
"I think everybody's competing," McDaniels said. "He's missed 12 practices, so I think ... he'll earn his role after he gets here, that's the best way to say it. Whatever he does with his opportunities he has once he gets here, that will tell us where to play him and how much to play him, and that really goes for everybody."Last edited by Aggies7; 08-08-2009, 02:16 AM.Texas A&M Aggies

Re: Official Denver Broncos Thread
lol... I think Avrbas is just on vacation or something. You guys have news. Forgive me for not going to dig up links but Torrain was released (believe he got injured again... minor but too much comp to ignore).
Jordan's been getting some first team snaps and looks good. Buckhalter also getting praise. Hillitis (sp?) seems to look too good to ignore and will definitely have a role.Comment

Re: Official Denver Broncos Thread
Whoa, I hope not. Please try and find a link for Torain getting released. (I can't find one on any of the Bronco sites I go to).
I saw he got hurt but didn't hear anything about them releasing him, last story I read about him was him talking about fighting to get reps on the first team.Comment

Re: Official Denver Broncos Thread
This is from cbssportsline (don't know any way to link it directly bc it's connected to one of my leagues so you wouldn't be able to see it).
The Denver Broncos have waived oft-injured running back Ryan Torain, who was diagnosed with a strained knee ligament this week. A fifth-round pick last season after an injury-plagued career at Arizona State, Torain missed almost all of last season. He broke his elbow during training camp and played just parts of two games before a season-ending knee injury sidelined him once again. After a long rehabilitation, Torain was having a decent training camp but was stuck in a crowded backfield that includes top draft pick Knowshon Moreno, free agents Correll Buckhalter and LaMont Jordan and holdover Peyton Hillis.
That's it.
A year ago, Mike Shanahan called Torain a potential Broncos back of the future.
Torain's Broncos career ended Wednesday when the team set him free. His agent, Jack Scharf, said Torain was expected to miss three to four weeks with a strained lateral collateral ligament in his right knee, which swelled up on Monday.
Torain got an MRI, and will get a second opinion today. He will receive an injury settlement from the team. Last season, he tore his left anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) and had elbow surgery. He had foot surgery in his final season at Arizona State.
"Ryan has persevered over the last two years and is a character human being and talented football player," Scharf said. "It's just a matter of staying healthy.
"Ryan is confident that once he gets healthy, he will stay healthy and have a long NFL career."

Re: Official Denver Broncos Thread
You've got Knowshawn now and some solid backs behind him. Even if he finally put it all together this year, he'd likely be somewhere else if things work out the way they should. If he can get/stay healthy, he'll probably make some noise somewhere else.Comment
