Some news and notes involving the Detroit Lions over the weekend.
ALLEN PARK - Some news and notes involving the Detroit Lions over the weekend.
The Lions have denied the San Francisco 49ers permission to speak to running backs Tom Rathman for a similar position in the Bay area. Since Rathman is under contract Detroit can continue to deny permission. League protocol usually states that if a coach is interviewing for a promotion permission is given. Detroit is not interested in assisting an NFC competitor at their own expense.
A broadcast report originating in New Orleans erroneously reported that Detroit had offered the position to Saints offensive coordinator Mike McCarthy. That apparently is not the case. McCarthy is expected to interview with the Baltimore Ravens this weekend. Despite the erroneous nature of the report, McCarthy is still the front runner in Detroit and is seriously considering an offer to join the Lions coaching staff as well as offers from Jacksonville, San Francisco, Cleveland and Tennesee.
"I'm keeping all of my options open," McCarthy told the New Orleans Times Picayne.Comment

The New York Post reports the San Francisco 49ers are said to be willing to dump RB Kevan Barlow since the disappointing back is due a $6.5 million roster bonus on March 1. A San Fran source tells The Post that Barlow could be had very cheaply.

Yeah when you have 1200 yds one season then the very next season play awefully, I think it raises some questions about the O-line.Comment
