    He's looked good all year.

So good, he has all of one TD pass through 3 games.

Sounds like the 2004 Bears passing game redux.

Dookie, you're right about the o-line being intact for now. However, I don't think Newberry will last past week 8.
I hear he has no cartlidge at all left in his knee...his days are almost numbered. If he doesnt make it through this season, he might just hang it up.

        Newberry is a warrior though.

wow Rumph's season ends again due to an injury.. and Plummer will miss several weeks after undergoing arthoscopic surgery on his ankle. It's deja vu.

In debut, rookie finds no miracles
Quarterback Smith locates few SF receivers, but throws 4 interceptions in loss

              Monday, October 10, 2005

              By MATT MAIOCCO
              THE PRESS DEMOCRAT

SAN FRANCISCO - The supporting cast did a fine job of keeping the 49ers close to the Indianapolis Colts for a while.

The defense forced two touchbacks with a fumble recovery and an interception in the end zone.

The kickoff unit recovered a surprise onside kick at the beginning of the second half, and the run game showed some ability to take the heat off a rookie quarterback.

It set up beautifully for 49ers quarterback Alex Smith, making his first career start.

But the great lawn at Candlestick Point would be no field of miracles. Smith committed five turnovers, and the overmatched 49ers lost, 28-3, to the unbeaten Colts in front of 68,084 fans Sunday.

"It doesn't feel good to throw so many interceptions," Smith said. "No one said this was going to be easy. I have a long road to go down. I have to learn from this game and take away from it what I can."

Smith's starting debut was a rough one. He completed just nine of 23 passes for 74 yards with four interceptions. He also fumbled twice, losing one, and got sacked five times for minus-30 yards.

After keeping it competitive for three quarters, thanks to a spirited defensive effort, the 49ers' game deteriorated in a predictable manner. They entered as a 15-point underdog, and they went home with a 25-point loss.

"Outside of the turnovers, I continue to see what I like in Alex," said 49ers coach Mike Nolan, who benched veteran starter Tim Rattay after last week's 31-14 loss to the Arizona Cardinals in Mexico City.

"He is resilient. They (good quarterbacks) don't let a bad play get them out of their game. They continue to compete. Alex continues to compete."

It's a fact of life in the NFL that young quarterbacks struggle. Young quarterbacks on good teams have a chance, such as Ben Roethlisberger, who was undefeated in the regular season last year for the Pittsburgh Steelers.

Obviously, Smith does not have the kind of players around him to make life easy for a 21-year-old who declared for the NFL after his junior year.

"If he plays like Ben Roethlisberger in his rookie year, that's great," 49ers receiver Brandon Lloyd said. "Realistically, this is good for him. It was a good decision to put him in; it was a good decision to put him in versus the Colts.

"Losing in the NFL is valuable. You can learn a lot. He needs to do that. It's only going to make him better."

Nolan said he spoke at length with Indianapolis Colts quarterback Peyton Manning before the 49ers selected Smith with the No. 1 overall pick. One of Manning's views still resonates with the head coach.

"He told me how important it is to stick behind him," Nolan said. "Peyton told me that he always appreciated (then-Colts coach) Jim Mora standing behind him the whole time. He said it made him a better quarterback, but it also made his confidence and belief in (Mora) that much stronger. That's important."

As much as he struggled, Smith seemed to score high marks with his teammates in the huddle. Even through his shaky play, Smith gave the appearance of maintaining his composure, teammates said.

"I'm happy with Alex," 49ers running back Kevan Barlow said. "That guy was brought in here to lead us. He has the kind of composure I haven't seen in a long time. [Ed. -- I take this as a shot against Dorsey and Rattay, or just mindless praise.]

"He was cool the whole time. For a rookie, he carries himself with a lot of confidence."

But the fact is, the 49ers' offense did not look any better with Smith than it looked previously with Rattay. Nolan said he made the decision to go with Smith because he gives the 49ers their best chance to win.

That point is debatable, but Smith is clearly being counted on as the future of the organization.

The 49ers have gone two straight games without scoring an offensive touchdown.

They've been kept out of the end zone on their last 28 offensive possessions, including the last 13 with Smith at the controls.

Smith completed more passes to Indianapolis defenders with his four interceptions than to 49ers wide receivers. Colts linebacker Cato June had two interceptions, one of which he returned 24 yards for a second-quarter touchdown.

Johnnie Morton's 13-yard first-quarter reception on a nicely thrown "out" pattern was the only completion Smith had to a teammate other than a running back or tight end.

"The best piece of advice I got as a rookie was that this is a marathon and not a sprint," said Manning, who completed 23 of 31 passes for 255 yards with one touchdown and two interceptions.

"Everybody wants it to be like it was in college, but it's not that way in the NFL. The key for him is to learn from this game. Six games from now or maybe 12 from now, he'll look back and realize that this experience helped him in his development."

Re: Official San Francisco 49ers thread

The one thing Steve Young emphasized, when it was announced Smith would be starting the Colts game, was that Smith needed to take care of the ball. Don't turn it over, if that meant being conservative, checking down all the time.

Either Smith didn't understand that or the gameplan and coaching preparations didn't emphasize it and they tried to have him do things he just isn't prepared to do.

Not that the defense is going to be able to win games by itself but 4 interceptions and a fumble isn't doing any favors for a beleaguered defense.

As bad as the line was (and looks like we were having more problems from the LDE than Freeney dominating Clement), I didn't see any 3-step drops trying to take 5-yard passes. Battle has the size but apparently not ready to take the pounding of a short passing game and Lloyd makes brilliant plays on the outside but isn't tough enough to take the pounding. Not having Johnson hurts too.

But even with better receiving, it's clear Smith is a LONG ways off. You can't say that a big play WR like Plexico would make a difference as it has with Eli this year.

Smith looks like a bust, with a huge cap number that is going to hamper the ability to improve the team in so many areas which need improvement. Look at what key free agents like Plexico or Price for the Cards have given to their teams. Can we sign impact free agents after giving a huge contract to a QB who looks like deer caught in headlights every time out? Yes it's early but I don't see any improvement in him at all. He couldn't even do anything against second and third stringers in preseason (at least Dorsey did).

Maybe too pessimistic after two debacles in a row but there's little to be optimistic about right now.

well give alex smith a break, from what i seen on sun. he was forcing the ball and trying to make plays, he needs to adjust to the speed of the game, imo he is going to improve, but the niners need at least better recieving core b/c the guys they have right now are not real big threats and plus their lineman has always be crappy since the last time they went to playoffs, their lineman suck and thats were i think they should focus, they have potential so i hope for the best of them in these next couple of weeks

Damn dude, it was his first start against the Colts. Let's at least give it some time. Eli Manning was putting up terrible games last year. Although Smith is no Eli, lets give it some time.

Just let him play. That's what I wanted Dallas to do with Henson last year, and now we still know nothing about him.

                      Now we've got Bledsoe though.....

It seems Alex Smith sprained his knee Sunday.. If I were the 49ers, I'd be extremely careful.. specially since they are facing a very good Bucs defense.
