Why a patch?

EA could release the software they use to create and edit their rosters.

Online announcement, links posted on their forum and release their actual program or part therof. This would then enable anybody who wanted to edit players to do so without all the fuss of creating a patch. Simply release what they aleady use.

That is, unless they edit their rosters in the game!!!

Obviously they don't edit their players in the game.
Player attributes and stats are stocked in some sort of database.

I'm pretty sure they hire/outsource some "expert" to do their player attributes... in an excel spreadsheet... and run some sort of database-import to convert the content of the excel files to the database.

It's completely naive to think they would release a program that lets you mess with files stored inside the Xbox One OS.

even if EA wanted to make such an editor, I believe it would be against the xb1 and ps4 EULA preventing modification of anything in the console. Probably void the warranty. Remember that the great tools such as NHLViewNG and such aren't officially supported because they are against the 360/PS4 EULA

I wasn't thinking of anything to do with the OS. I mean a standalone program to edit a standalone roster file. An official NHLview, for want of a better name. A PC editor for editing saved roster files.

I agree it is naive to ever think this would happen. We could only dream of having access to the official editing software, whatever it may be.

It's equally naive to think EA would admit to the debacle that is current gen NHL 15!!

A recent Madden game didn't have the ability to edit players, and that was patched in.

If you look at the create a player feature, the editing is the same as it always was... I think it's entirely possible they could patch that in, as well as patching in number/captaincy changing through the main menus.


Will they do it? I don't have faith that they will... Madden and FIFA are their money makers, not NHL (or the game that was cancelled 2 years in a row, NBA Live). I seriously doubt the staff even works on the game once it's shipped, minus a few people to do rosters.

I want to be wrong, because the editing feature is a big one for me. I guess time will tell... What a shame...

Rammer has tweeted that a new draft is coming in a patch maybe there's hope for editing too. At this point I am taking a wait and see approach. Before I give them any money there needs to be some serious updates.

If a whole draft can be patched in and you can still create a player, pretty sure this can be patched in. All the equipment selection is still available when you create a player. All they have to do is let you edit it. I really wish there was a way when Sony adds mp3 support to patch in custom music. But that's another story

You're right about it being simple though.

And it's a feature they have to implement for EASHL anyways. So releasing it in a patch would only make sense as it wouldn't cost them much.

Let's hope that they also implement a "Download" menus to share sliders and rosters for NHL 16. THAT would be a new feature (unlike : New in NHL16 : EASHL!)
