I'm in Year Three(2018-19) of a Franchise and I'm noticing teams making unnecessary signings and decisions.
Big example of this is the San Jose Sharks who let an 89 Overall Martin Jones walk(Who signed with Nashville, who has an 89 Pekka Rinne still, but more on that later) and did not sign a legit NHL goaltender. They are currently going into Year three with three goalies ALL UNDER 70 OVERALL. Now it's not because there is a lack of goalies in FA or through Trades, but they have put themselves right up at the cap limit. and here's how based on what I've seen.
At the 2018 Draft they traded peanuts away for Jason Spezza(86ovr and a $7.5M contract)(Who is now currently on the Block at Season Opening). Ok cool they acquired a solid center. Only problem is they have Logan Couture(88), Tomas Hertl(85), Melker Karlsson(84), Mike Ribeiro($4M contract), Chris Tierney(83), AND Daniel O'Regan(81) at center. LW is set as is RW(well 5 players over 82) along with 9 Defenseman above 81. So they went after Spezza for no reason and it cost them Martin Jones(who signed for $7.275M). And easy trade to make just looking at the trade values is trading Jeremy Roy(Who's upset, has a lot of value and is lost in the depth chart) to a team like Tampa Bay for Vaselevski(Who's stuck behind Bishop)
So they are in a bind now but there are plenty of options, but the AI refuses to make any trades(All throughout the NHL). Teams are hoarding players at the expense of other positions in DIRE NEED. Detroit and the Rangers have four goalies over 80, Winnipeg, Toronto, Dallas, Hartford(Carolina), Islanders, Seattle(ARZ), St. Louis, and Tampa Bay all have three goalies over 80 overall. There are plenty of options for a team like San Jose to make a trade.
CPU appears to not utilize the buyout option when it could be extremely useful and almost 95% of the teams stay right up on the cap limit.
I don't understand programing, nor will I ever, but there needs to be a bit of an adjustment to the AI of the General Managers so they field the best teams they can.
