It's a shame they ever released 2K9. Think about what kind of hockey game they could have made if they had axed 2K9 and maybe even 2K10 to develop a complete game to compete with NHL 11. 2K9 really killed it for 2K Hockey, much more so than 2K8's control scheme or 2K7's Cinemotion/Players Breath.

Agreed, but Take Two refused to put money into the title. NBA sells far more and that's their flagship, granted their sports "line" isn't much of one though these days. It's tough to compete with EA when they can and do easily outspend you. Also having Bish as producer on both MLB and NHL really hurt both games imo.

Sad news. I can still remember the good ol' days of 2k3, the Thunderpuck forums, 2khockey.net, the change to ESPN NHL Hockey, back to ESPN NHL 2k5, then 2k6. After that, it seemed to go completely down hill. Damn you Cinemotion, damn you!

2k3 will always be my favorite NHL game.

2k10 showed potential, but there were moments where it just made you want to throw the controller through the TV. And not, "WTF the CPU is cheating!!" moments, but moments of "What. The. Hell... is this a finished product?"

Agreed. You're making me feel old slick, heck I even remember when it was the EA Wish list before being absorbed by TP and then Sega came along and did something special for a few years.

yeah the thunderpuck days ruled, I also agree that 2k5 and 2k6 focused on real stuff in hockey. Awesome detail and great support and feedback from fans (treyarch days to early kush days), but with cinemotion it all started to get weird. It´s funny that EA took 2Ks concept of being real and sim and 2K took eas old crazy way of gimmicks....

Oh well. NHL2k5 and NHL2k6 on Xbox are some of the best hockeygames ever made.

Just how good was it, as I was only familiar with their NFL title? Did it have great presentation, gameplay, etc.?

Just how good was it, as I was only familiar with their NFL title? Did it have great presentation, gameplay, etc.?

It was good and the presentation was revered. Offline left something to be desired as the cpu seemed to continually skate circles in the corners and 1 time too much. But, online, I always loved it and we even had a short lived 20 min/periods league. Finn even made an editor for it, but it didn't seem to respond to changes like NFL 2K5 did.

On topic, 2k3 and 2k5 were brilliant, it's a shame this series has gone the way it has due to legacy issues and just lack of resources.

can you blame them, hockey doesn't sell, even nhl's sales figures with all their awards are beyond brutal, just not a popular sport

Not in the states at least, which is a crying shame. It's much more enterataining than any of the other sports.

I've always been a 2k3 guy (and they had some ESPN presentation in that, too, but it was the first year for that so it wasn't too full blown), but ESPN NHL 2k5 was a good second place candidate. Fleshed out more, but the 2k3 gameplay always had me.
