Re: Another Toronto team? It could happen
Canada can't support, nor do they want a basketball franchise.
Personally, I don't think this would work either. You can throw whatever amount of corporate money you want, but uh, no one's going to be cheering for this team. There's no fanbase to tap into. If the Leafs played this team, it would be a 100% Leaf fan crowd. Some people may take them on as a second team, but when you're running a team and exactly 0% of the people would take you over the other team in the city, its bound to fail.
At least when the Mets came into town, there were Dodger/Giant fans who were looking for a team (imo that's the best example of something like this at this point). But I mean there is nothing here. At all.
Plus it would hopefully have lower tickets then the leafs!
But I think the NHL should expand to Europe before the add another North American franchise.Comment

Well at least some NHL board of governors are whispering about it. I'm NOT in favor of this. Toronto fans are obnoxious and delusional as it is. Do we need to have TWICE the volume of idiocy on the radio?!
Now I wouldn't mind a team based in Hamilton though.

Most of the obnoxious Leaf fans are delusional and barely know anything about hockey or the NHL.
With a new TO team, you'd get fans that actually liked hockey and the NHL.
I for one, think it would be great. The area can easily support 2, if not 3 NHL teams.
I think one of the issues the NHL has is that it's in too many non-supporting cities. So the more true hockey markets in the league, the better.
But I think the NHL should expand to Europe before the add another North American franchise.
Also, 99% of the arenas over there aren't even close to NHL standards and I doubt many of the people in most European cities can afford NHL prices.
If the NHL really wanted to capture the essence of European hockey, they should have the N.A. winner play the winner of a European tournament for the Cup.
I think that will come soon.
Let the KHL, the SEL and all the other European teams form their own NHL Europe league, play 82 games and then battle our winner.
I think that's the most logical way to go.
For me, I think Toronto, Hamilton, Maine or Wisconsin, deserve a team for more than Stockholm or Prague.Last edited by Money99; 10-31-2008, 02:14 PM.Comment

Re: Another Toronto team? It could happen
Why do all these sports leagues reward cities who drive teams away? Or why do these leagues let owners move teams from viable cities. I don't understand how they just keep giving teams back (Cleveland, Houston in the NFL, maybe Winnepeg here)....I dunno, just doesn't seem to be a good idea.Nintendo Switch Friend Code: SW-7009-7102-8818Comment

I'd love to see a team in Hartford again. The only reason they left is because they couldn't get a new arena built. It was kinda humorous how they played their games inside a frickin' mall!Member of the Official OS Bills Backers Club

Get it back to 4 divisions with the top 4 playing each other for the Conference title. THAT'S how you build rivalries.Comment
