I can't wait for this game. I think I look more forward to the Winter Classic than the World Jr opening game.
Puck Daddy has a great article detailing it's inception and how it almost never was.
It's not a big surprise that most of the suits in the NHL didn't like the concept and wanted it squashed. Only Bettman approved of it initially.

Then came the resistance: Like from the NHL in its pre-lockout days, as the League's brain-trust (minus Gary Bettman, an early and ardent supporter) didn't find the concept workable.

There was more resistance. Like finding teams that wanted to give up a home date for this experiment (the Rangers weren't into it). Like finding a venue for the game (the Yankees were more concerned about the price of keeping the pipes on in the winter than outdoor hockey). Finally, Collins' energy and diligence found a taker in the Buffalo Sabres and a venue in Ralph Wilson Stadium. NBC wanted a star player as their foil; the Pittsburgh Penguins agreed to bring Sidney Crosby(notes) to face off against Buffalo in 2008, a game that at times was perilously close to not happening.

You guys realize that the alumni game is not gonna be televised? Gonna show clips of game during the live broadcast of the teams practices. Lol.

Hopefully the NHL shows a condensed version sometime.

makes no sense on why ths is not on the NHL Network or even either teams local broadcasts. i bet more people want to see this game than the classic itself!!

Ehhh, they'll be coverage somewhere on the internet. Maybe not live streaming, but I'm sure we'll have an accurate account of the game.

I can see it not being nationally broadcast like the actual game, but even the NHL Network won't be showing it? I always thought any unique programming they could get, they'd jump on. Guess not.

yeah, i mean they are showing the live practices right after the alumni game. during the practices they will show some highlights of the alumni game etc.

no reason the NHL Network is not showing this live. god forbid we see something other than On The Fly at 9:30am.. lol

Early forecasts are saying temps will be in the low 40's on the 1st. Go figure, the entire month of December has been below normal and the temps finally decide to go above normal just in time for the winter classic.

I've been saying ever since it was announced that we were getting the WC that it would be 60 and sunny.

It's only a matter of time before one of these gets messed up due to weather. The NHL has been really lucky the last few years.

You would think there would be some kind of plan in place. That's the first thing that came to mind to me when the first Winter Classic was announced. And they actually had that snowfall in Buffalo (though it's different from rain).

Then again, it's the NHL. They'll completely botch it somehow...
