If we must keep shootouts, Dr. Jones has the correct solution.
Look at all these converts you've gotten!
Now, what's your solution for the tendency towards low scoring games that has seemed to crop up. Mine is to ban Jaques Lemaire from the league and destroy all video of any game he coached. Then use those memory things from Men In Black on all NHL coaching staffs.Last edited by ImTellinTim; 04-04-2011, 12:29 PM.Comment

Re: The Official 2010-11 Regular Season Talk Thread
I personally enjoy shootouts. Granted, I've only been a big hockey fan over the past couple of years, so that's all I've known --- but it's nice having a winner & loser every game, without having the possibility of an extremely long overtime (ex -MLB).
If they were going to make a change, I'd like to see the games worth 3 points.
3 pt - regulation win
2 pt - overtime / shootout win
1 pt - overtime / shootout loss
0 pt - regulation loss
I also wouldn't have a problem if they just simplified things and just gave teams 1 point for a win, 0 points for a loss, regardless of whether it happens in regulation, overtime, or a shootout.
As long as they don't bring back ties, I'm happy.Comment

I agree. I like watching the shootouts too. I'm pretty happy there are no more freakin' ties in the NHL, that really bothered me, but I do think the points system should be different too. Any type of loss should be 0 points, 1 point for shootout win, 2 points for regulation/overtime win.Comment

Agreed not a fan of shootouts, but I like the idea of making a shootout win only worth 1 point, losers shouldn't get points no matter what, good suggestions and wish the league would actually do that.Favorite Teams:

NFL- Cleveland Browns
MLB- St. Louis Cardinals
NBA- Boston Celtics
NHL- Chicago Blackhawks

Re: The Official 2010-11 Regular Season Talk Thread
Ha. It's been, what, 5 years now since I started my crusade?
I don't even know where to begin. Lots of bad omens for fans of entertaining hockey in the second half of the season. Star players injured by the boatload. Ovechkin's numbers nowhere near what they once were. Stamkos disappearing from the scoresheet. Goalie numbers creeping towards Hasek-era levels. The Devils thriving while playing like it's 1999. The Penguins grinding out win after win without Crosby or Malkin. The Capitals being roundly praised for winning the "right" way (ie, 2-1 instead of 5-4). No disrespect to fans of those individual teams (better win ugly than lose pretty, right?), but as a neutral fan, I'm not pleased by this turn of events.
Off the top of my head, here are a few steps to combat this, without going into radical/costly solutions like bigger nets, bigger rinks, shorter season, contraction, zone defence penalties, extra points awarded in the standings for x goals scored in a game, etc. (though radical solutions may be required at some point).
NOTE: These aren't in any particular order and require fleshing out (which I'll do when I have more time).
1. Acknowledge that scoring is down, and that it's a problem
2. Stop romanticizing defensive play
3. Protect your star players from injury
4. Be vigilant (and consistent) in the calling of hooking/holding/interference penalties
5. Define goalie interference once and for all *hears the applause from Detroit fans*
6. Reward teams that focus on scoring (aside from implementing my points system, why not have the first tiebreaker in the standings be Goals Scored, for example?)
7. Don't allow hand passes in the defensive zone (treat as even-strength icing)
8. Don't allow short-handed teams to ice the puck (treat as even-strength icing)Originally posted by Thrash13Dr. Jones was right in stating that. Re: The Official 2010-11 Regular Season Talk Thread
Because I'm not spending $100 to watch a game live in which one or both teams are playing for a tie.
The last season before regular-season OT was introduced (1982-83), Washington and Minnesota led the league with 16 ties. Hartford had the fewest (8). If there was no OT in 2010-11, 25 out of 30 teams would already have 16+ ties with games to spare. Atlanta's record would be 18-33-27. And you think the Thrashers have attendance problems now?Originally posted by Thrash13Dr. Jones was right in stating that.
