Re: The Official 2010-11 Regular Season Talk Thread

    Roenick's thoughts:

Roenick: "Does it surprise you? Does it surprise you that Matt Cooke would be so ..."

    Ross: "Dumb?"

    Roenick: "Chicken****, and do that?

"Right from behind. Blatant from behind. Fedor Tyutin didn't even turn. Didn't move. Was standing there for three or four seconds, and he still hit him from behind."
Roenick: "Not one second did he see anything but his name and his number. It goes back to so many different things that I talk about when it comes to the respect factor. Matt Cooke, No. 1, doesn't have respect for anyone. He's one of the least favorite guys in the League by the players for a reason. Hitting Savard, having that all situation ... granted, you decide what you think on that. But this situation last night is exactly what gives players bad names, gives guys bad names. It's why we have injuries. It's why someone's going to get either paralyzed or killed on the ice one of these days. Because of idiot, idiot, idiot people and plays like Matt Cooke did last night."

Roenick: "That situation last night did not happen instinctively. It did not happen quickly. He had three or four seconds to make up his mind and drive those numbers into the glass."

"That's a situation where you take Matt Cooke, because of his history, into the office and you give him 20 games flat. Twenty games, gone, thanks for coming."

Anyways Leafs trade Francois Beauchemin back to Anaheim for Joffrey Lupul, Jake Gardiner and a conditional 4th round pick in the 2013 draft.
Agreed about Cooke. I wish someone would send him into next week.

Is it just me, or is Lupul ALWAYS part of some big defenseman trade? Geez.

Re: The Official 2010-11 Regular Season Talk Thread

Knowing the NHL's wheel of discipline, I'm actually happy with 4 games. It wasn't a blatantly dirty cheapshot like the Savard one, but it was a classic, irresponsible boarding incident.

I do believe players should be more responsible when facing the glass as to not put themselves in such a bad situation, but the hitters still make the hit. It's more of the hitters fault then the hittee.

Roenick's right, though. Tyutin was in that position for a good amount of time (I don't think 3 - 4 seconds is accurate, probably more like 2 full seconds... they go slower then you think). Cooke did not have to hit him or hit him that hard. A simple rubbing into the boards takes a player out of the play without taking him out of the game entirely.

It's amazing to me that not only do forum members like us say nothing is going to change until someone is paralyzed or dies, but even former players like Roenick say this. It's a shame that that is what it's going to take for anything substanial to be done.

Ohhh, Lupy! Twice traded for Pronger, now traded for another former Duck (to be a Duck again). Good luck to him in Toronto, I always liked him with the Flyers. But I can't say I wouldn't do the Pronger trade again, obviously.

The thing is, though, Matt Cooke is the very definition of repeat offender. He was dirty as hell when he played here, and nothing has changed. Nothing short of a 20 or 40 game suspension is going to deter him in the slightest. There should be a "3 strikes" rule with guys who are continually doing this stuff (Avery, Pronger, Neil, Tootoo, etc.) - every 5-minute non-fighting major will be a 10-game suspension, every action that's worth a single game will be an automatic 30-game suspension, no questions asked.

The NHLPA are at least as much to blame as the league, though. They don't want long suspensions, because it'll cost them $$$.

They don't want soft shoulder/elbow pads, either, which is ridiculous. Steckel's hit on Crosby, accidental or not, wasn't brutal or illegal (other than perhaps interference), and that's exactly what's frightening about it. I find it hard to believe that Crosby would've received a concussion if Steckel was wearing 80s-style pads. People seem to be underestimating the long-term repercussions of Crosby's injury. He'll be out for at least 2 months, he'll be far more susceptible to concussions on lesser hits going forward, there's a good chance the best player since Gretzky and Lemieux won't live up to his potential, all because the players and league are dicking around on this.

As much as Crosby annoys some people, it's a crushing blow to the league (and to all fans of quality hockey) if his career takes a Lindros/LaFontaine path.

I couldn't agree more. Who knows how long Crosby is going to be out? As a Twins fan, I've seen it with Morneau. Sometimes they just take a very long time to come back from. It's just utterly ridiculous that they are still *****-footing around with things that could easily be fixed.

Agreed. I don't want Crosby to go down that path, he's too good for the league.

Yet another good game between Montreal/Boston going on right now.

5-4, Boston, in the 2nd after Montreal scored 17 seconds after a Boston goal.

                      I love this rivalry.

#Blackhawks acquire forward Michael Frolik and goaltender Alexander Salak from Panthers for Jack Skille, Hugh Jessiman and David Pacan.

                        And lol, another goal allowed.

Wait. There was a goalie fight in the Bruins/Habs game? And 8 goals in the 2nd period?

EDIT: Pretty weak goalie fight. Come on guys.
