I bet you its the Islanders owner. Cheaper than funding a new arena.

      Link

Here is the link about the 25 year lease and a some other little bits from todays press conference. There really is not that much information just your typical quotes from a press conference.

From what I read on another site following this, Barclays has enough room to add Hockey specific Locker Rooms and that they won't be renovating the Arena either and that there will only be 15,000 seats for Hockey, according to Gary Bettman. The remaining seats will just be unused.

Now I know the Islanders have been struggling on the ice for a while now so attendence has been low but man, that just seems to be to small for a city like New York City.

I love topics like this and all the contributions made. Helps me to learn more about what is going on behind the scenes in the NHL.

They will not be able to get 15k in the Barclays Center on a regular basis. Not happening.

One of the conveniences for playing at Nassau Coliseum was being able to drive there. That is what most Islanders fans were doing. I'm not sure what % of dedicated Islanders fans were coming east from the city, but I'd venture to guess it was very minimal.

Either way, glad they kept them in NY but I'm just not sure how it'll work out over time. Also, it'll be interesting to see what they do with Nassau Coliseum. Knock it down?

I think it would be a boom to get an MLS team there, assuming they knock it down.

I just don't understand how you build an arena in a major market and don't build it to properly accommodate a hockey team should the need arise.

I hated driving to the arena... I try to take the train to any sporting event.. While I would have loved to see them stay in Nassau, that political nightmare was just impossible to get anything done.. This certainly beats them going to KC, Seattle, or some other out of state location.

If the Islanders moved from NY with that history, while the treading water Phoenix franchise somehow stayed anchored in the desert, it would've been a tragedy. Glad something got worked out. The rest will fall in place.

The original design for the arena had hockey in mind, but after the economy took a nosedive they had to downsize the whole project.
