The Year is 2500, the NHL has long died out, the Arizona Coyotes franchise still might return.

I think there's pretty overwhelming evidence by now to suggest that there really is no such thing as a bad hockey market. If you have competent ownership/management and an arena in a good location, you'll almost certainly succeed in Phoenix or Atlanta or wherever. (Yes, teams in Canada and "traditional" US markets are more likely to survive/thrive despite poor ownership/management.) The NHL's problem has always been putting the cart before the horse and rushing teams into new markets (gotta get that sweet expansion $$$) without properly vetting prospective ownership groups.

        (bold emphasis above mine)

You have made this point numerous times going back many years, and it has been proven absolutely correct on so many occasions that it's actually depressing. Until you pointed this out, I honestly never paid much attention to the fact that the NHL seems to have no objection to handing franchises to slick, fly-by-night new money hucksters of all shapes and sizes, oftentimes in more-or-less sweetheart deals, and then when it goes pear-shaped in (usually under) a decade, they do the same thing all over again. I'm not commenting on any one particular move, but the league seems to do this more often than any other sports league, and it's somewhat curious to see the same mistakes get made over and over again.

Or maybe they're not mistakes at all, at least from the owners' perspective...

Flyers play their first game against Utah tonight. Feeling nostalgic for the Coyotes. They’ll probably end up as a footnote in hockey history, for about 5 years until they try it again I’m sure. But as a 90s kid and Phoenix / Arizona being a 90s franchise, there’s something there. Roenick, Tkachuk, Khabibulin I consider as being big parts of Coyotes lore. Shane Doan. I have a strange attachment to Danny Briere being there (thanks NHL 2k3 franchise mode). They had some random years late in their life. Became a weird charity franchise for the last decade or so that I don’t like, but there was some highs.

Can’t believe we can close this thread but let’s not… ya know… just in case
          NHL - Philadelphia Flyers
          NFL - Buffalo Bills
          MLB - Cincinnati Reds

Saving this line for my obituary.

You had me in the first half.

This thread will never close. This saga will continue for years even if the Coyotes never get a franchise back.

It does feel weird with no Coyotes in the league, but also feels weird seeing Utah take over like an expansion team without being an expansion team.

The part I hate is how the Coyotes/Jets history will now be "forgotten". No team in the league owns the Jets history despite the new Jets being present.

Outside of the Cleveland Barons, there isn't a single NHL franchise from the non original 6 era that hasn't continued its lineage in some way, until the Coyotes/Jets were put on hold.
