...and with this the tournament loses all value the Olympics had in terms of being a prestigious international competition. Imagine young hockey players dreaming of that day they get to play for the Canadian World Cup team and face off against the rival North America B!

Or, to put it another way, can you imagine if Germany or Argentina had to face off against the Asian All-Star team at the FIFA World Cup?

Tampa really put on a show tonight. My goodness Stamkos showed some filthy handles on both his assist to Cally and his break away goal. So happy Cally could return to MSG with a win and a 2 goal performance like that.

Will be interesting to see if Josh Harding clears waivers.

I could see some team claiming him. After all, if he can't play, he'd just go on LTIR? So some team with money who needs goalie help might just pick him up and hope he can play again at some point this year. If not,then it was like a 1.5M or so risk.

Other than making money, no other reason for world cup of hockey over the olympics. Hockey at the olympics is the part of it I look forward to the most, so if they get rid of the NHL part of the olympics, that'd kill it so much. Sure, we MIGHT get AHL players on the national teams,but Canada/USA would be so much weaker without the NHL guys. They're basically handing Russia the gold if that happens.

Scheduling wise, it won't hurt NHL that much. Just start the season on October 1st and don't have random 3-4 day breaks between games for some teams.

Agreed. The other option is to play during the Summer Olympics. I know that sounds ridiculous, but I think it's less silly than what's being suggested for the World Cup.

As a fan, I love the NHL participating in the Olympics.
But I can totally see the NHL's side of things. It hasn't helped increase the popularity of the sport and they get treated like crap from the IIHF. They also don't make any money off it either.

If they go ahead with the World Cup I really hope they don't make all-star teams.
Just go with 8 nations and be done with it.

If this season has proven anything it's that NHL probably just used that as an excuse or something(winter break as reason for so many back to backs). Leafs this year play 18 back to backs, that's MORE than last year with that supposed condensed schedule. So NHL claiming olympic break would lead to these types of schedules is wrong.

I know scheduling is hard, but NHLs just seems messed up.

This season,the most back to backs is 19 for Sabres/Jackets,but then we have Kings/Jets with 9?

Just give teams/players 14 days during regular season for the olympic break. Start the season on October 1st, or maybe even start the season the final week in September and that'd help make up time right there. Not including 2 week break for winter olympics,the last week of september until the 1st week of april is a total of 25 weeks. That's a average of 3.28 games per week. 3-4 games per week is the usual amount anyways, so there really isn't any reason for back to backs at all,even if they have 2 week break.

The main issue with olympics doesn't even seem to be regarding the schedule, it has to do with money. Though they often seem to throw schedule in there as part of the reason just to make it seem like it's not just money as the big problem.

This Frankenstein tournament would take place in September, so I doubt the schedule would need to be condensed.

Pretty much. Same time frame as previous Canada/World Cups. Sounds like they want all the games to be played in Toronto so they can set phasers to maximum gouge. So much for "growing the game".

lol, it'll be held in Toronto and tickets will be more expensive than Leafs games....and arena will still be sold out!
