Sounds like the "loophole" the Leafs found to make their offers more attractive to free agents by overloading the deal with signing bonuses (so guys get their money before each season begins and it doesn't matter if there's a strike or stoppage) might not be so good after all as the government and Tavares are in a dispute over 8m he apparently owes them since they calculate his bonuses and income differently than he reports it.
If I'm any Canadian team or owner, I'm helping Tavares case here. If he loses this appeal, all other Canadian franchises will be forced to suffer the same issues. Not that all do what the Leafs do, but it still impacts them.
This is why I hate this hard cap in the NHL, and it won't ever change because Bettman is obsessed with small market US teams while the Canadian teams are at a disadvantage that has nothing to do with hockey.
A 90m cap hit for the Leafs let's say pays 40m in actual salaries. But 90m cap hit in somewhere like Tampa pays 70m in salaries. So doesn't that impact a lot? The NHL needs to get rid of the hard cap and just have a luxury tax.
